Seemingly out of nowhere a new spike started for me about two weeks ago. As far as I can remember I did not subject myself to any loud noises. I always use earplugs when I'm even in remotely loud places, like bars or restaurants. And when I fly and travel in general I always use my noise cancelation headphones.
However I have been flying/traveling and working very long hours for about a month in a row, and in between had a couple of hard party nights.
When it started I was just lying in bed and *poof*, out of nowhere I got a new tone around 4000 Hz in my left ear. I first thought it was a fleeting tinnitus, but as minutes passed by and it didn't settle I got pretty anxious. I fell asleep with the help of some white noise. When I woke up around 8 it was still there, but falling asleep again and waking up two hours later, it was gone!
One week later (now a week ago) it came back again out of nowhere during work, and now I've had it for a full week. This is longer than I've had a spike in years. It's a tone that is shifting between 3200 Hz and 4600 Hz but usually it's at 4000 and it's not somatic (like my main tinnitus is). This gives me some kind of hope since I tend to think it'd be worse if it was completely stable and fixed at one frequency. If it fluctuates maybe there's a greater chance it will go away completely?
My hyperacusis has also fluctuated a bit with the onset of the spike but it's pretty manageable. It's mainly the despair and frustration that is really keeping me down atm. It's so fucking annoying that it doesn't seem to matter that you're trying to treat it and take all the precautions that SHOULD make it better, or even prevent a spike in the first place. I can be on tour with my band, play 30 shows in a row and drink every night without a problem during or after. But suddenly out of nowhere at other times when I'm being super cautious a spike can come out of nowhere. Nothing makes any sense.
So with this thread I want to ask for some general tips on things I can do to try and mitigate/settle the spike? I know there was some kind of guide on here, but I can't find it atm.
I am currently:
- Home from work, trying to not stress as much as I can
- Eating relatively healthy
- Taking vitamin supplements
- Drinking green ginger tee
- Listening to the ACRN, which actually eliminates the new tone even on very low volume (http://generalfuzz.net/acrn/)
- Sleeping 8-10 hours per night (luckily I don't have much troubles sleeping, mainly I think cause I already have a massively loud white-noise tinnitus that I've habituated too relatively well over the last few years)
- Meditating 30+ minutes per day
- Using my LLLT machine
- Had a neck and back massage yesterday
...but spike is still going...
Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated!
