I live on the same long block as a firehouse and for the most part it is quiet since when they exit and use their siren we can not hear it from there. However, from time to time on their return back to their firehouse, they will pass my window (I live in a high first floor) and blast their siren when there is no apparent reason. Needless to say it is without warning and disquieting. On occasion when I have been near my window when they drive by and have an opportunity to observe the firemen (on the driver's side and also some riding in the open in back) it doesn't appear they are wearing any protective ear gear. Since I cannot tell from my window if they are wearing ear plugs since they are so small, I can clearly see they are not wearing any ear muffs. Oh my goodness... if they are not arming themselves with ear protection.. I can only imagine what tinnitus they have to suffer!
I was just curious to see if there are any firemen and ambulance drivers posting on this forum? If so, what have been their experiences with tinnitus and the long range effects upon them.
I have great respect and admiration for all the men and women who choose to enter these helping professions as they are courageous individuals. Firemen put their lives on the line each and every day; these brave people willingly run into infernos while citizens are fleeing in terror to safety. Ambulance drivers perform a much-needed service to help save lives. It seems inevitable that a countless number suffer the after-effects of these sirens and alarms.
