Any Inadvertent Exposure to Sounds While Sleeping?

exposure to broken muffler noise
Amongst the many worries with hyperacusis that I have, one that always comes up is being exposed to loud sounds while sleeping. I think that is what happened yesterday to plunge me into another bad setback.

You see, I try to stay awake during the day just in case some sound from the outside occurs so that I seek protection. Now, if I am sleeping, a VERY LOUD sound will awake me. But it is the intermediate sounds that worry me if I am sleeping or napping during the day. Yesterday I got suddenly hit by some very loud chainsaw sounds, bounded out of bed, went to the other side of the apartment, but forgot that that side faces a street with cars and trucks passing by , even if a quiet street generally. Anyways, I woke up pretty bad, but a bit better today. Al this never used to bother me, now I have to be soooo careful, and I can`t anticipate every situation, right?

Problem is I have always been a night person, and I drift into odd hours really easily.

Have you tried wearing earplugs when you sleep? Or would your T make this unbearable?

Bill:

Sorry for the late reply. Broke my toe, and been out of regular action.

Yes I wear earplugs but that only cancels outside noise a bit. It's a big worry. As far as T, I have little T. I am on this forum for the h. exchanges.

I have to change my patterns again, it's too dangerous. But it is hard!

I can't imagine the outside noise being so loud that it could hurt your ears while you are wearing earplugs without waking you. In my life and on this forum I have a reputation of being a paranoid person, however I honestly can't imagine the noise having an impact on your ears if you are wearing earplugs. It can certainly happen, but for it to happen you would have to go to a loud concert or to a pub where loud music is playing. Surely it is less noisy than that at your home.

Bill:

I hope you are right!

Today, I happened to be in bed awake but still groggy, and some very loud screechy noise started sounding on and off far away, yet very noticeable. That freaked me out. What if I had been asleep? Would it have wakened me? Could it have hurt me had I been asleep?

Anyways, I feel safer awake during the day, but can't EVER stop eventual drift to late night hours when I manage to stay up days for a while.

If it is not loud enough to wake you up, And you are wearing earplugs, I am sure there is nothing to worry about.

Are you sleeping with your windows open?? Where do you live? If you describe where you live, it may help us understand your situation better. Have you tried using sound machines at bedtime? It can help buffer the outside noises.

One upon a time:

No I never sleep with windows open. I guess I will just have to get my sleep rhythms back to a normal pattern, and that is hard.
