Can a Handclap Damage Hearing?

I was laughing and joking around when I clapped my hands in front of my face, now my ear is full and my hearing is muffled?

Can a handclap damage hearing?
No. what you are experiencing is TTT. The muscles in your ear have gone into protective spasm giving you a feeling of fullness and muffled hearing.

It has happened to me many times and is totally harmless. It's actually a good thing because this is how your ear attempts to shield the cochlea from auditory damage.

My tinnitus can be quite reactive also. ie temporary increases in t from clapping hands, laughter, sometimes even just everyday conversation. i suspect this is part of h.

So now, relax. you can try some relaxing herbs such as passionflower and valerian, along with some magnesium. rest your ears. it will settle.

Your hearing is definitely not damaged. However, ear fullness is your body's way to signal to you that whatever it is you did to cause it is NOT ok. Many people on this forum described getting T spikes and ear fullness as a result of doing something that a healthy person would not even notice. Our ears have been compromised, and now innocent things can cause a setback. These setbacks interfere with our recovery and can even cause temporary or permanent spikes.

To summarize, you are probably going to be ok, but it might be a good idea to ensure that your ears are not exposed to moderate noises like the one that caused you to feel ear fullness. These moderate noises probably include the sounds made by vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, blenders, etc.

Thanks for this thread, I just did the exact same thing (joked and clapped my hands) and a split second later I was scared that I did damage. (Although there is no increase in T volume, and no muffled feeling either.)

Reading this thread helped me calm down.
