Hi,

As a newbie to pulsatile tinnitus I'm keen to hear a description of your pulsatile tinnitus e.g. is it constant 24/7, is it a whoosh or a thump thump, can you stop or vary it by head or neck movement, posture changes etc.

My pulsatile tinnitus is a heartbeat sound in my left ear that sometimes moves to the center of my head. I'm usually only aware of it when I am lying down, sitting quietly, tilt my head towards either shoulder, crane my neck etc. I can change and sometimes stop it by posture changes, pinching my nose and attempting to breath out, moving my neck to another position etc.

And finally, do you feel that your neck / shoulder may be involved?

Thanks for reading this.

Most often that would be blood flow within the jugular vein and possible other veins and arteries. This can happen by C spine changes that would include the C1 area, forward hyperextension of neck with having turned head to one side and/or hypertension if you are young. If you are older than other things need to be considered per veins and arteries that is discussed in basic pulsatile tinnitus articles. A hum can travel to the thyroid from other vein or artery input or a hum can be just associated to the thyroid.

Most highly professional articles explain all of this in detail in which I have posted the most valuable ones.
Talking to your doctor about complete blood work and a color ultrasound has real value. If then it is suspected that there's other input then other radiological exams are needed. A neck X ray may be of benefit to note C spine problems. There are varied treatments from medications to use of a neck collar. Forward head/neck hyperextension control can often make a difference.
