My tinnitus started in my right ear in December. After 5 months, my left ear has also developed tinnitus. It also seems that in my right ear the tinnitus may be diminishing. (I say "seems", because it is really hard to gauge this subjectively.)

I think that my tinnitus may be age related hearing loss. I'm 60, so the timing is right. Both my mother and my grandmother both had very poor hearing.

My question: Has anyone experienced tinnitus that is just due to age related hearing loss? If so, did your tinnitus get less loud or go away?

      Karl,
I have had it for over 2 months now. The first month it would get low 1 day out of every week and then just stay loud 24/7 the other 6 days. Here in the last month it gets low every 3 days and stays low. Then the other days it is screaming 24/7. I dont know what this means if it means anything. By low I know it is still there but it is like a 2 on a scale of 10.That works fine. Other days it is 10 out of 10. awful. I am 54 years old. Health is not good.

If you're 54, your "T" could be age related hearing loss. 50-60 seems to be the age range.

Did you get tinnitus from a loud noise? Or did you just wake up one day with tinnitus?

I heard the ringing after getting a sinus infection. I think that my gene's are kicking into gear, starting my hearing loss, just like getting grey hair. It's my time for hearing loss, part of the Program of Life.

I am hoping that the tinnutus will go away when my 4 kHz hair cells complete the process of going deaf.

I sit on the couch from work and I woke up it was as loud as i think a persons can get.Ihe Ent said some high frequency
loss. 40 t0 50 each ear. Other than that my hearing was good.Told me nothing could be done about it. Told me to take predzone for 6 days.I think I have had it for 20 years but it was hissing sound when I was driving home one night. Did not know what to make of it. Got in the house it was still there. It came and went and I never really thought of it again till 20 years later. 2 months ago I came home from work and doze off in the chair and the right side of my head was sort of resting on my right shoulder and then I woke up a few minutes later and there was so many different high pitch sounds I said what is going on. The T lessen through out the night and it was gone the next day .Two weeks later done the exact same thing dose off head resting on right shoulder and the same thing happen only it never went away and the t has destroyed me since then.I have done just about all I can do.I dont know how you do or anyone else that has this.
In these almost two months I have done acupunture, ear medical science in Cinn. Ohio. he wants me to take two anti depr. pills said it would be gone in about 6 months.Went to a ENT said hearing was fine but I had High freg loss. 40 in left and 50 in right. Said I did not need hearing aids and there was nothing they could do about it. PUT ME ON A SIX DAYS OF PREDIZONE. I only took the first days worth. Mistake???? Dont know.
went to regular doctor put me on Xanax I quess to calm me down and help me

This is my question, too. I have read one very vague statement in a paper ("Tinnitus Miracle" by Thomas Coleman) that for some people going through hearing loss, the tinnitus can go away.

You are going through a hell of time. There may be hope on the horizon with these new devices that are about to hit the US market from Germany, called Acoustic CR Neuromodulation (see article that I just posted). Another option, since you live in Ohio is to try Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, which has one of the leading specialists in tinnitus.

Other ideas: An ENT doctor I talked to said that "Elavil" can help with tinnitus, although I've never tried it. Some people say smoking marijuana can make it bareable, although I've never tried that. Wearing maskers and listening to white noise can make the "T" less distracting (although I am sick and tired of wearing my own maskers!).

I'm sorry, but we're the blind leading the blind. My feeling is these new devices are just around the corner of becoming available, and may be able to help a lot of people - though not everyone.

      Karl,
Yes you are right it is like going down a dead in street only to find nothing is there. Is your T always there? Does it ever get low like I said mine does here recently for a some days during the week. That just seems odd that it does that for a few days and then Starts raging Loud again when i wake up. It almost seems like it is on a two day cycle. Strange

The past couple of days I've seen a change in my tinnitus. I hate to jinx things up by talking about it.

Yesterday, it was also in my left ear, and not so much in my right. I was almost hopeful in the morning. But by the end of the day, it was very loud. I was really looking forward to drinking wine by the time I got home from work.

Then this morning, I could hardly hear it. This was unusual, because I've been hearing it constantly for 5 months now.

I'm trying to not think about it. That's hard to do, but that may be the trick.

When does it end? I mean of course the T's or only when we end! Going through a spike I hope and have my Zen hearing aids maxed out. Hate this stuff but I know it's hear to stay and just get oust
to it. Who is better to see about this junk A neurologist or a phycratrist? Just wondering?
