Ears Sore from Ear Plugs

You're overusing them, the result is inflammation, if you continue to do so you run the risk of getting an ear infection, which can GREATLY increase your tinnitus level.

They are more comfortable than 3M 1100 plugs (although they provide a little less noise reduction).

Try Hearos. I've had them in for hours

 

I tried Hearos, 3m 1100 and Max Lite. 3M 1100 are the the only ones that I can wear comfortably. I also think they are much easier to take out, as the others cause too much suction.

Recommendation: Try them all and see which one works best for you

 

As if things couldn’t get worse, it’s hard to leave the house without carrying ear protection, but now my ear canals, the outer ear area, are too sore to any plugs in. Help!

 

Will need to wait a few days for things to heal. Do you have some ear muffs to switch to in the interim? Also, sounds like you eventually need to try a different brand and type of plug. Perhaps you have small ear canals, and need a model that is more of a slim fit.

Hi, could anyone possibly recommend noise cancelling headphones? I assume that they are safe for tinnitus? Thanks again...

 

They are not completely safe - search this forum and you will see that there are numerous people who say that they got T as a result of wearing NC headphones. I am pretty sure that this risk can be eliminated by wearing earplugs underneath one's NC headphones (I realize that the reason you wanted to use NC headphones was to replace earplugs).

I have had great experience with Bose QC25 NC headphones (+ earplugs).

You might want to consider wearing Peltor X5A muffs. That would replace earplugs and it would be completely safe. The only problems with them is that they are bulky (so not a little awkward to wear in public) and might not be too comfortable if you wear them for more than an hour or two.

I tried them once, and found out that they seem to not provide much noise reduction. I guess people buy them to ensure the pressure is being equalized - I have flown while wearing regular earplugs and it ended up being ok.

 

Ear planes have a NRR of 20, so don't expect them to reduce the noise much at all. The better foam earplugs have an NRR of 33 so they are much stronger when it comes to noise reduction.

 

Hi, has anyone tried silicone ear plugs? Their nrr rating is 22, lower than foam, but they irritate my ears less. Thanks..

 

I have an Eargasm knock off and they are medical grade silicone. They are comfortable, although not more so that foam for me. The NRR is 18. I find them faster an easier to put in compared to the foam ones.
