Hyperacusis and Tinnitus Worse After Cruise

For about a month now, I've also been experiencing hyperacusis. Sounds above roughly 80 decibels feel uncomfortable and can even be painful, but I didn't think much of it at first. I've always used headphones following the 60/60 rule, have never attended concerts, and the few times I've been exposed to loud noise were brief and mostly out of my control.

However, during a cruise holiday last week, I noticed something strange. When I woke up and was still lying in bed, I would hear an awful chiming noise. It usually went away after I got up and moved around, and wouldn't return until the next morning.

Since coming back home, though, both my hyperacusis and tinnitus have been getting worse. I now hear not just the chiming sound, but also an "electrical" noise, both in the morning and in the evening. Last night, I only managed about four hours of sleep because it was so uncomfortable.

Even when the tinnitus isn't active, I still feel a kind of pressure in my ears when it's quiet, along with what might be a low rumbling sound.

I'm still young, and even though I've read many success stories from people who have improved over time, it's hard to imagine living my whole life without true silence.

Is there a chance this is just temporary and might clear up in a few weeks or months? Or am I more likely to be stuck with this for good?

Please help.

We have no control over when our spikes occur or how often they happen. We also cannot control their intensity or how long they last. The only thing we can control is how we respond to them. Stress can make things worse, as can exposure to loud sounds, certain medications, and lack of sleep. Focus on what you can control.
