My thoughts can get way more intense some nights when I lie down. Even if I lie down for a nap sometimes, they get intense. I can get more angst, anxiety, depression, etc. amplified.

Is there some kind of physiological process why this is?

By the way, it is more than just being alone or being in the dark. I mean literally lying down in bed even with lights on.

I think laying down triggers the brain into certain states. It's like how some people think of certain things they need to do or come up with a good idea just after crawling into bed.

The short & more obvious answer is that there's less to distract you.
