Anywhere less loud than Boston.
Tinnitus Since
Permanent/Highly intrusive since 2017.
Cause of Tinnitus
Noise Over Exposure. Worsened by ototoxic Street Drugs/Meds.
My tinnitus level is severe most of the time.

It started out mild a few years ago, so I know the difference between intrusive and barely noticeable.

Now that it has become such a distraction, I have noticed a pattern where it is sometimes a bit less intrusive for a few hours early in the day and then begins to ramp-up or just comes back at full force all at once.

I don't think it's my mind playing tricks on me because the area of the most intensity also switches from my slightly less worse left ear in the morning to my devastated right ear later in the day.

If there was a way to keep it at that slightly less intrusive level of early in the day then I think I might be able to return to living a relatively normal life.
I can only hope that some of the upcoming new devices and treatments will do exactly that.

I would be interested to read about some of the major fluctuations that others with severe tinnitus have noticed.

Take care everyone-
and best wishes to all.

I used to have that. Only occasionally do I have what I perceive or call a "reduction" or "little bit less intrusive" (is there a one-word adjective that would describe this phenomenon?).

But, it happened much more regularly months ago - I think it was the same pattern as you are describing.

I am replying because I have severe tinnitus as well and even back then, it ramped up and became more intrusive. Just as you do, I was desperately wishing it would stay like it is in the morning - it was an improvement.

I don't know why that happens. My theory is that it is showing how the brain is part of the tinnitus phenomenon.

I think tinnitus is a result of ear and hearing damage. The tones or noises we hear is the ear and brain "communicating" or the brain's attempt to 'hear' the frequency that was lost. Something like that. I guess when the tinnitus is not as "bad" - it can "calm down " at night and also in the morning when you wake up.

Brain activity is less during these times and usually, there is less noise happening. But, my tinnitus worsened somehow and it no longer calms down at night and it is rare that it's less intrusive when I wake up and if it is, it only lasts a few minutes instead of an hour or two how it was before.

I have no theory why it worsens. :(

I have to agree with you. I have severe tinnitus and notice the same in the early morning hours. I imagined it had something to do with sleep and would ask, what is it about sleep that puts my tinnitus to sleep? If I wake up to lower tinnitus, there's a fighting chance it will stay lower through the course of the day. If I wake up with louder tinnitus, my day is pretty much mapped out for me. That said, I'm finding this less & less unfortunately meaning more bad days.

I am just guessing but I wonder if our brains try to rest just before sleep. Supposedly, we do heal ourselves during sleep so maybe it's possible that the tinnitus calms down just before waking. At least, that seemed to be my pattern just after the onset of my tinnitus. It's definitely not the same now.

It's difficult to guess or speculate because many tinnitus cases or situations change.
