I saw an article in the Tampa Bay Times today about a small cochlear implant that performs sound processing using a device attached to the skull. It is small enough that your hair might hide it. I only skimmed the article and have no idea if something like this would work for tinnitus, but anything that connects us to our audio environment might help mask it.

Below is the newspaper article, followed by the link to what Osia calls a Sound Processor.

There are many such electrical devices currently in the pre-trial or trial phase.

The Billy Mays of tinnitus treatment, Dr. Djailian, has a device in development. I am not enthusiastic about it, as I view him as a less effective copycat of existing tinnitus treatments and more interested in monetizing his "treatments" than in finding a cure.

Cochlear LTD has begun their invasive, though not as invasive as a cochlear implant, trial.

The goal is to provide the same residual inhibition effect that a cochlear implant offers, without destroying any remaining hearing, as cochlear implants typically do. If it works, this may be as close to a cure as we will get.
