Let's say white noise at about that same loudness as a bee buzzing by your ear.

When I had tinnitus at its worst the tinnitus would ride above the sound I was exposed to. So in bed at night it could be very low but in a supermarket with lots of people talking and background music I could hear tinnitus as a static hissing ringing noise with the other sounds.

I can sometimes mask it with white noise, but it needs to be pretty loud. My tinnitus is very similar to white noise and is more of a lower pitch. A fan is really the only thing that can almost completely mask it
