      Hello,

      I am new here. After getting a louder tinnitus after some noise I also got a kind of acid reflux. I have the choice to use Ranitidine (Zantac) or Rabeprazole. Which one of these is less ototoxic, or preferably not ototoxic at all? Is there a non-ototoxic alternative?

      Thanks,
      Zok

      I hope to hear the answer to this by someone in the know. I'm on Omeprozole, having taken ranitidine for several months. My T is spiking at the moment, hope it goes down.

      When did you first notice spike after starting taking the ranitinide?

      I am now afraid to take any of them (actually Rabeprazole or Ranitinide) but seems like I have too.

      It's difficult to say. My tinnitus isn't noise induced I had a mini stroke TIA. I have constant T, but dreadful heartburn and indigestion, i took Omeprozole 20mg for a year, then tried ranitidine, then back to 10mg Omeprozole. Thing is, you may not get a spike, the meds didn't cause mine, I just have it. Millions of people take antacids (PPI's or other) with no ill effects. You don't want oesophageal cancer from the acid. I'd say take them. Omeprozole works better for me but I keep the dose low.

      Good luck.

      Thanks, actually the doctor said even that the PPI isn't ototoxic.

      I took it for quite some time 1-2month, I am not sure if it increased my tinitus, but for sure it now causes a stomach pain so I had to stop taking it.

      Actually it seems that after something like 3 days of continius use (I usually used it a little bit not 3 days in a row with 30-40mg per day) the noise has increased. I hope this will be temporally.

      @slipware

      I hate to bother you and I know this is an older thread, but I was wondering about something, you said that you were taking "ranitidine" for awhile it sounds like it did not effect your tinnitus is that what you were saying ?

      Thank You in advance for your response.

      All ppi’s cause tinnitus and in some cases hearing loss. So do h2 blockers like Zantac etc (with the exception of cimetidine). Check out dr website at “hearing loss help.com”.

      From what I have read, all PPIs have tinnitus listed as a side effect. Most H2 blockers can also cause it, including cimetidine. I am not sure why people post things saying one drug is safe without knowing that for sure. A quick Google search of the drug name and tinnitus pulled up authoritative research. https://www.europeanreview.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/956.pdf

      Cimetedine is listed as causing vertigo there. It isn't listed as causing tinnitus. Having said that, feeling vertigo for the rest of one's life might be as bad as hearing tinnitus for the rest of one's life.
