I was informed recently by a clinical pyschologist that tinnitus is the second biggest affliction to affect Mankind. Yet we still have no cure or treatment to lessen the sound, only management techniques.
Any form of pain or discomfort is only there because we think its there. Objective measures are pretty hard to come by for a lot of areas of medicine, particularly complaints of pain or other discomfort.
I once had Tinnitus because I thought it was there. Really. When I stopped believing it was real, it went away. But that was a long time ago with some ear ringing. Cant confirm as fact though so see it as an assumption and dont jump to conclusions.
I would be very interested in seeing some details citations to ancient texts;
even more so: what about correspondence from WW1 vets and/or medical notes from treating doctors of those vets?
I have searched far and wide and come up with NO references to tinnitus before about 1960 ...
Most extraordinary lacuna in medical history, as far as I can reckon.
