For one thing, automatically discount anything from mercola.com and don't trust it unless you can find the sources they are citing and determine that those sources are reasonable. Mercola is a snake-oil alt-med guru who you shouldn't trust any further than you can spit.

For another thing, given what we know about the connection between dopamine/serotonin and depression/tinnitus, it seems more likely to me that some kinds of tinnitus arise from the same transmitter problems that create depression, rather than "tinnitus creates depression".

ok - cheers linearb. Not sure I trust anything much on the net, even the ones that aren't 'selling' could be set up just to boost the SEO of the ones that are selling...

I found the depression bit whilst trying to figure out whether B12 Methylcobalamin should be taken on its own or whether it's better to take it with Hydroxycobalamin - having trouble because of all the snake oil and spitting... everything I read is contradictory... think I'll make a separate posting & see if anyone knows.

Well, the fact of having tinnitus seems like a sufficient reason to be depressed to me...

If you're not depressed listening to a fire alarm in one ear and a diesel generator in the other 24/7 then there is something wrong with you ;)

I'd break the depression of tinnitus down further to words like grief, sadness, anger, despair etc. Reactive things, not clinical depression per-se, but certainly its something that can take you to real depression.

I love it how you can have "situational depression" for being in a bad situation or after suffering a loss, but if your situation is permanent it's called an adjustment disorder. Like if I can't accept my mangled life, I have a disorder.

if doctors don't have codes to apply to you, they can't bill insurance. Anyone who goes to a psychiatrist will walk out with a bunch of DSM diagnoses and ICD-9s
