Didn't your doctor further elaborate what kind of surgical operations? Kind of vague...

Tinnitus can be caused by many things, e.g. noise-induced, ototoxicity, brain tumors, otosclerosis, acoustic neuroma...
For pulsatile tinnitus there are lots of different reasons too and some of them can be operable (and tinnitus may go away!).

Do you have pulsatile tinnitus? There's a good site for pulsatile tinnitus here: http://whooshers.com/

Currently, for the run-of-the-mill type tinnitus - that most of us have - there aren't any viable surgical operations. Some are being worked on (for example, the HIFU Surgery).

Ask your doc what kind of surgeries he meant, I'd be interested to know. :)

There are also the electrode implants but it's still very experimental and works mainly on single tone single side tinnitus. Severe cases only. Very expensive.

There are a few very specific cases of tinnitus that can be treated surgically like the chiari malformation or some cysts in the brain. Very rare cases.
