Curious if anyone has experienced a long-lasting spike in tinnitus or hyperacusis, or any hearing loss issues, with just Trimethoprim (not Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole/Bactrim)?
I've had mild tinnitus and severe, now moderate, hyperacusis for several years. I'm a musician, and of the two, hyperacusis has always been the bigger issue. Still, I've managed to deal with it, continue making music, and generally not worry about it.
However, I just took two days' worth of Cipro (2 x 500 mg daily) for bacterial prostatitis and have now developed a very noticeable tinnitus spike in one ear, not to mention obvious joint and tendon pain. I was already reluctant to take the medication because of its side effects, but I didn't realize hearing issues were among them. I stopped as soon as the tinnitus and joint pain appeared. Three days later, the tinnitus spike is still there, and I'm suspicious about possible hearing issues too, although hyperacusis seems unaffected. The joint pain may subside, but all signs suggest the tinnitus may not, unfortunately.
The infection is now much better, almost negligible, but understandably my doctor wants me to take something to completely clear it. They wouldn't prescribe Fosfomycin, which sounds both safe and effective, and instead prescribed Trimethoprim.
From what I've read, Trimethoprim isn't usually ototoxic, and if a tinnitus spike occurs, it should (hopefully) fade. But since I've already been hit with this new and possibly long-lasting tinnitus spike, I'm very reluctant to take anything else that could make it worse, or worsen the hyperacusis.
Since Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole is definitely known to be ototoxic, I wanted to ask specifically about people's experiences with just Trimethoprim.
