I love languages too! Right now I only speak my first language (Danish), though, and English. I understand German and I do speak a little German too. I used to be great at German when I was in the Gymnasium, as we say in Denmark. Which is well. A little older than High School in the U.S. and a little younger than College, I guess. Unfortunately I don't use it as much anymore, because well. I don't have German classes at the University, like I had when I was in the Gymnasium so some of my German skills are long gone. But I guess it would be pretty easy for me to learn it again if I decided to catch up some day. I do miss learning - and using languages so maybe I will catch up with my German one day when Uni doesn't eat up all of my spare time :p
I'd really like to learn French and Spanish as well!

Besides my mother tongue which is danish of course, I only speak English fluently....I understand and can speak a little German too, but only very little and contrary to what some might think it is not very similar to danish :D

I want to learn Spanish very much. It is one of my favorite languages, although I have many favorites like: French, Italian, Romanian, Latvian, Icelandic ect.

If you want to learn perfect English or speak it without a foreign accent then you have to live in the UK. One can learn to speak it fluently and not live in the UK but they will always have a foreign accent. Having an accent doesn't matter to me in the slightest and I think it's quite appealing. It's just the fact you said you wanted to learn perfect English. I admire you wanting to do this or learn any language perfectly. It shows you are determined and not afraid of a challenge and therefore, have all the attributes of habituating to tinnitus with relative ease.

Well done and wishing you all the best.
      Michael

Czech is not a hard language as Czechs point it out to be. I would say Hungarian is difficult and FInnish.

Hoper, answering your question: Catalan is a Romanic language (a dialect of the Latin that roman soldiers spoke), so some words might be similar to Spanish, French or Italian, but, on the whole, they are very different from each other. Catalan and Spanish are both very complex and reach , philologically speaking, great for literature works, but I would chose Catalan for poetry and classic theater; it sounds beautiful to the ears.
I speak both, but I think and dream in Catalan, never in Spanish. Catalan and Spanish culture is quite not the same, and we don’t feel Spanish because we are just not Spanish, no matter what the passports say.
The first words I can remember were told to me by my loving mother, but the first words in Spanish I can recall were told to me by a teacher at the nursery school. Can you see the difference?

Salutacions ben afectuoses - (This is Catalan for: Warm regards)

Saludos afectuosos - (This is Spanish for: Warm regards)

I love them too, but Catalan has a priority for me because I love my culture, not only the language.

I am from Croatia and I love both Catalan and Spanish. I would love to learn Catalan because it is so interesting but Spanish as well...oh and Italian and Czech and German hehehehee. I know Greek and Croatian/Serbian as well.
I created a thread called World Music, it would be nice if you can post some Catalan music on there.

Great thread! I'm currently learning Japanese. I'd like to learn to read French, Russian, Chinese, and Persian in the future. Japanese for the anime and manga, French, Russian, Chinese, and Persian for the literature. I imagine I'm not going to be so young when I finally reach this goal

Japanese is the hardest language I trudged through. Still salty about it. Other languages like Russian are no walk in the park.

But you trudged through it didn't you? ;), I went through the Core2k deck on Anki and started reading visual novels with a text hooker. Not going to lie, a lot of the time I have a difficult understanding what I'm reading but I'm slowly getting better. What other languages do you know?

Even though foreign languages are my natural talent, I been thinking about putting the lang books down. I am spending more time learning about nutrition (how to eat healthy) and reading about spirituality.

Well, damn. You're even more ambitious than I am. More drive too no doubt!

Fellow Cantonese speaker! Wish I knew how to improve my Cantonese though since I'm unable to talk about more advanced topics. Really impressive to know those languages at your age though.

For sure. The newer districts in Guangzhou are entirely Mandarin-speaking. Shenzhen is almost completely Mandarin-speaking, even though it's next to Hong Kong. I notice most overseas communities still have many, and in some cases, majority Cantonese speakers though. Thank goodness or I wouldn't be able to order 乾炒牛河 with any confidence.
