Ok, today there was a demonstration of dog training where a live, and a stupid guy shot with an "ammoless" gun five meters from me.

No T increase, nothing, but should i worry for my hearing?
Usually i'm not paranoid but now...

You were 15' from the discharge of a low-powder bullet without a projectile. That sounds like it was probably a glorified cap gun?

If there was no immediate pain / spike, then I wouldn't be worried about it. Loudness of a firearm is in direct proportion to the explosive force of the load. I would be surprised if the cartridge used for something like this had much more than the primer load in it.

      You were outdoors, right?

in fact i don't know, i just know that it was some sort of gun wich made a big sound when fired, i say ammoless because it was during a presentation of dog training when some trainers , when attacked by the dog ( wearing the big suit of protection) use this to show that the dog id not stopping by the noise.. Do i assume it wasjust a gun to maje a sound. I don't know if you understand...

Here is a peer reviewed study on this query - for further interest...

      Results
"Starter pistols produce peak SPLs above 140 dB. The numbers of MPEs are as few as five for the .22-caliber starter pistol, and somewhat higher (≤25) for the .32-caliber pistol."

      Conclusion
"The impulsive sounds produced by starter pistols correspond to MPE numbers that are unacceptably small for unprotected officials and others in the immediate vicinity of the shooter. At the distances included in this study, the risk to athletes appears to be low (when referencing exposure criteria for adults), but the sound associated with the starter pistol will contribute to the athlete’s overall noise exposure."

Oh great, earplugs for every race now! Couldn't they just say "Ready, set, go!"

@Digital Doc, I surely have noticed, during the years since the T & H got crabby, that humans are absurdly noisy for no good reason. I guess they are stimulated in some manner which heightens the experience, of whatever it is they are engaged in.

Now crows and, dogs and several other non-human individuals can be almost as noisy, as we know.

I didn't want to make things seem too extreme, at first, but I suppose you are ready to adsorb the fact that I also live 7/10ths of a mile from the USA's biggest Army-infantry-training-base: Ft. Jackson, SC. Yep, Howitzers 24/7, in 2-3 day blocks - but it's not every week. If there is enough cloud cover the contents of the house seem to jump about a 1/4 in. The windows rattle too sometimes. I guess that sort of stuff is going on a few miles inside the giant base, but the db ranges probably aggravate things for the T & H sufferers, in the vast region surrounding it. The machine guns are constant for weeks sometimes, we just get used to it... sort of. Again, all of this is taking place a few miles (more than 2 probably, maybe over 4). So it doesn't cause acoustical trauma... just noise pollution. And you wonder why I'm an earplug addict.

That totally sucks, and sounds like you are literally living in a war zone. I won't complain that as Spring has arrived, I have been using the earplugs more outside as there is constant lawn crews, and motorcycles. That cacophony of artillery sounds totally awful!

I used to love to watch all the war films, from the silver screen all the way to Platoon. Hence, I can say it sounds, and feels, pretty much like the old theaters that had... "Sensurround" systems back in the 70s. Or... something like modern 'thumping,' but with plenty more high frequency joy threaded in...
