Cause of Tinnitus
ear drainage/sinus problems
Hi everyone,

Pretty amazing these days we have the internet so if I can't sleep from a low hum in one ear I can find this forum. My low hum has only come on recently, but I have had ear and sinus issues for 25+ years. Dust allergies, congestion, etc. My real ear issues started in 1991(I'm 55 now), with a bad ear infection that required two rounds of antibiotics and a right ear that was damaged and hasn't drained properly to this day.

I had one fairly severe Meniere's occurrence in 2007 or so, I got super dizzy one day, threw up all afternoon and spent 3-4 days regaining my balance. Since then OK.
What I have done to this day is try to sleep on my back and my left side to minimize drainage to my right ear.

But in just the past few months I have noticed a low hum in my left ear, which has been the good one, so far.

The hum goes away if I breathe or move or swallow, so I don't think it's environmental.

I can say that fairly confidently, because yes I was awake one night last month and put my ear to our fridge, and walked to the two relatively close water pumping stations and none of them resembled my hum. I can't rule out my new crown or root canal getting cell phone or radio signals, or the ocean and earth resonating the ground at my house, but the way I can make it go away makes me think it's more my ear pressures.

My solutions in the past have been tussins to be a decongestive, steam showers, and Sudafed or other meds to reduce allergy issues. So back to that.

Welcome to TT, sorry you had to find us here.
There are a few here that experience a low hum, and some of them have Menieres Disease (which you mention you have).
I had a low hum for only a week when my tinnitus started, it was not long after a very bad head cold.
Fortunately it went away, but was replaced by a high pitch hiss.
It is a good idea to revert to your treatments you've used for years, I hope the tinnitus resolves for you. I know how disturbing the low hum can be.

I have the low hum too in my right ear. It seems to come and go. If I eat a load of carbs or drink enough alcohol it can disappear for days. Very strange.
