I've had tinnitus for quite a while. I am 12 and I think it was caused by a headset for my xbox and I used to have it really loud. Everyday I hear ringing and it really really annoys me to the point where I am desperately pulling on my ears to make it stop. Please can someone help me to reduce and treat my tinnitus and if you can stop it. Thank you and god bless

Have you been to the doctor's? If not I would suggest you do so as soon as possible. Have your doctor check to see if there is an infection.

Since you're twelve I can't see how your T can be caused by exposure to too much loud noise. But I would avoid loud noises if you can and stay off the xbox, or at least keep the noise down.

Have you had problems with your ears before? Is the ringing still there now?

Ya, check with the doctor to see if there is hearing loss by the xbox. Even if there is, it is not the end of the world. You are so young, you can adjust and adapt. My specialist MD told me that he had T from 13 and he lived fine and went on to medical school. So just relax and keep calm.

For the time being, you can do some masking to help you relieve your anxiety. There should be many free apps now for sound generation or sound synthesis for you to find some tracks which can mask your ringing. I used masking heavily during my early days. A CD player by the bed helped me sleep. An ipod loaded with nature sounds was always in my pocket so I could get masking going with mobility. At the office, my work PC was loaded with 'aire freshener', a free sound generator. When you know you don't have to face the ringing head on, it can calm the nerve. Of course, as time goes by, as you get more used to the ringing or as the ringing becomes less loud, you can cut back on masking. Best of luck and don't worry too much.

Can you put on any nice masking tracks for you to help sleep? Maybe a fan?

Really sorry to hear this. For sleeping, you could try having the radio on quiet. It could mask the sound and listening to the radio is so much more relaxing and normal than listening to that noise in your head. Also, T can be like any kind of muscle pain. Rest it enough and it will get better. But once it has, you just have to be careful. Resign yourself to the fact that without ear protection you just can't do loud concerts or nightclubs anymore. But console yourself that you've learnt early and that those kinds of things aren't going to do you the damage they do to so many people because you're taking precautions early. I know that's not something you really want to hear but if you are careful, you will be able to manage this and live with it.
