Cause of Tinnitus

Hi I started with tinnitus 8 weeks ago, came home from work and had a buzzing noise in both ears. Thinking it must be wax in my ears I started putting ear drops in. After three weeks went to my GP and both ears clear of wax. Referred to ENT and had a hearing test, could not hear the high pitched noises as the T sound is so loud. Got a MRI tomorrow. It's ruining my life I get no reprieve and the noise is unbearable. Can't sleep or consentrate on anything. I'm a nurse and need to focus on my work. Wish I could have one hour without the noise. Feeling very depressed at the moment.

Hi Lotte64,

Welcome to the forum.

Do you know how you got tinnitus? Have you been sick? Were you at any loud events (ie, concert, club)? Do you work in a noisy area? Did you take some medications prior to the ringing? Take any trips on an airplane?

I know it is not easy, but I would suggest for you to try to limit your anxiety and stress, because tinnitus feeds off of it. The trick - in a nutshell - is to stop fighting it. Once you tell it "okay, you win", your mind will gradually accept it and ultimately file it into the "not important" file cabinet. Obviously, you will still hear the ringing, but it will not affect your nervous system. Again, this is not easy at first as you are dealing with an intrusion, but it can be done as tens of millions of people have tinnitus in the US alone and the majority of them have habituated.

Hello @Lotte64 ,
Welcome to the forum! I'm sorry you had to join but I hope we can help you. I think just knowing that there are others who understand what you are going through is some consolation. Before I found this forum, it felt like I was alone in the world with this. Do not be surprised if the MRI does not reveal any cause for your problems. I think it is used mainly to eliminate the possibility of acoustic neuroma which is very rare. Please keep us posted.
