Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Okay, I am willing to take the financial risk. I am just concerned that it might make things worse.
It might help in some cases, but it probably won't. Donating just 10% of what you'd spend on ineffective treatments to Tinnitus Quest could provide a much better return in the medium term. Spending money on scams and supporting charming charlatans not only harms you but also hurts the entire community.

Now, imagine if all the money wasted on these schemes had instead been invested in research.

Just a philosophical thought.

Update: I tried HBOT 1.5 times. The first session went well, but during the second session, they increased the pressure, and the oxygen compression system stopped working. I ended up lying there for about an hour while they tried to fix it.

Is it dangerous to just lie there during such a situation? The machine couldn't be repaired, so I'm heading home now. My left ear feels slightly more pressurized, but otherwise, I feel okay.

Hi @LulaLula, I'm sorry you had a bad experience during the second session. I never experienced eye twitching after any of the 20 sessions I had. If there was any fullness, it receded after a little while. I'd give it another few days at least.

I'm also a very anxious person, and I've found that twitching and fullness can both be triggered by it, both from my own experiences, and from the research and experiences of others online.

Okay, maybe the eye twitching is due to stress. I hope the ear fullness goes away soon. It's been a week now. Thank you for your answer; it's much appreciated.

I believe eye twitching can be a symptom of the extremely high dose of oxygen that you inhale. I believe it's nothing to worry about but best to discuss with your doctor.

Okay, thanks! I've had it for a week now.
I tried it during the early stages of my onset, probably in the second or third month. It didn't help me, but I met other sufferers in the "submarine." One person said it helped him, while another had a similar experience to mine — no noticeable effect.

What I would ask people here is this: How do you believe that breathing in oxygen can reduce tinnitus or hearing loss weeks or months after the onset? Hearing loss is permanent, and any treatments administered after the first week are unlikely to have any effect. Even steroids often fail unless they are given within 48 hours of sudden hearing loss.

Something to think about!

Results

The high frequency (3–8 kHz) Pure Tone Average (hPTA) of the entire study population (n = 118) was 40.26 ± 15.42 dB pretreatment vs. 24.99 ± 15.83 dB post treatment (Wilcoxon matched-pairs test, P < 0.0001). Pre-treatment hPTA was not statistically different between early and late study groups, 39.87 ± 16.00 vs. 40.86 ± 14.35 dB in the early vs. late group, respectively (ANOVA, F[3,232] = 22.574, P > 0.05). The post-treatment hPTA on the other hand, was significantly lower in the early vs. late treatment groups (21.93 ± 15.38 vs.31.19 ± 15.09 dB, respectively; ANOVA, F[3,232] = 22.574, P < 0.05).

Any comments on this study? Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in tinnitus with normal hearing in association with combined treatment

The results seem remarkable—just under half of the participants experienced improvement or complete eradication of tinnitus after receiving both betahistine and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Would it be worth trying one or both of these treatments for tinnitus if your goal is to revive outer hair cells that appear absent on an OAE test in the 5–8 kHz range, which is the most susceptible to damage?

Hi folks, I have a question. Does HBOT have to be 100% pure oxygen? Most off-label places, even with hard chambers at 2 ATA and above, just use concentrators.

I spoke to a guy at another place who said that if it is not pure oxygen, it does not do much. I was wondering what everyone's take or experience was. I have seen the article mentioned above, as well as the one about tinnitus with regular hearing and the combination with steroids. I think my hearing is slightly different, but it is good enough for me. It is just the ringing I would like to fix if possible.

I did my first HBOT today: 60 minutes at 2.0 ATA in a hard shell with an oxygen mixture (via nasal tubes). No effect. It has been 9 days since the gunshots that caused my tinnitus, from using substandard ear protection. I still hear ringing after HBOT and 4 days of Prednisone. I went on Prednisone 60 mg with a one-week taper four days after the event. I know that is about 96 hours later, a bit late, but hopefully it helped a little. It was worth a try.

I am going to do another 5 HBOT sessions and see what impact they have. Unfortunately, on the weekend and Friday I will have to settle for soft shell, but I figure it is better than nothing. I have to stop next Tuesday because I need to fly for work. So it will be 3 HBOT sessions this week, 2 next week, and 3 soft shell in the middle. I may do more hard shell with 100% pure oxygen for a week or two at another place in a nearby town and report back, but the time and cost commitment is steep for what feels like a hail Mary.

So I was wondering what people think about 100% oxygen vs concentrator. Is it worth it at weeks 3 and 4 for me to drive an hour to a place with 100% oxygen and spend another 1,800, which I could do but would be tight? Or should I just give 5 days of HBOT a try and then throw in the towel?
