Is it possible that my impacted wisdom tooth is what’s causing my hyperacusis & TTTS??? I’m afraid to take out my wisdom tooth because I don’t want to make things worse with my tinnitus & hyperacusis.

I’ve also been getting pain in the face and headaches. Has anyone been through this??

      What does TTTS mean?

There is a low probability that's your impacted wisdom tooth is causing this but it's not impossible. Removing a wisdom tooth can have complications when removed incorrectly.

I'm having somewhat the same thoughts myself but it's a catch22. If I were to remove my wisdom teeth I reckon the risk of getting worse is bigger than the chance of getting better. So far I've come across three patient reports of people getting rid of their H by removing their impacted wisdom teeth. But then there are also patient stories where people got their H and T from removing them. :dunno:

@lapidus i hear you man. I’m also worried if the pain killers or medicine will make things worse as well.

But why do you think the chance of getting worse for you is bigger?

I am not sure what caused my severe hyperacusis, TTTS and worsened T in late 2013/early 2014. There was no specific incident, it came on gradually over a period of time. I think it even started some year/years earlier with TTTS but only for short periods at parties and such so I never gave it much thought since it disapeared just as fast as it appeared. But my wisdom teeth started to come through the gums around that time too so that's why I'm thinking they could be one possible cause but not enough is known to be sure. It could just as well be cumulative hearing damage to the audiotory nerve/synapses from noise over time or entirely a middle ear problem. The reason I think it could make matters worse is because I'm not sure the teeth has anything to do with this at all, the procedure being noisy (especially if they have to drill) and if there's some nerves connected to the hearing apparatus or middle ear that could be damaged in the removal or as you said, the medicine/anesthesia being ototoxic. Lots of factors to take into account in my opinion.

@lapidus well I hope we can both get rid of our H&T with getting our wisdom teeth taken out. Stay strong bro

@Adriel93, @lapidus, did either of you two ever go through with this? I'm in a very similar situation currently and trying to decide between the lesser of two evils in getting my wisdom teeth removed as opposed to waiting for my tinnitus and hyperacusis to stabilize. I'm still in the acute phase and gaining a lot of anxiety.

I'm really hopeful this will help, because I can modulate the tinnitus in both of my ears by pressing on the back molars with my tongue, but between the ototoxic anesthesia, antibiotics, painkillers, pressure on the jaw + neck, and of course, the invasive drilling, it might just make things worse.

Nope. I'm figuring the risk of worsening is much higher than the chance of it getting better for me so I have no plans currently to do it. Even though I still sometimes wonder if my wisdom teeth could be the cause, it's quite low on my list of possible causes. So sadly I don't have any advice for you.

No problem, just your opinion is plenty helpful. Thanks.

General point for anyone looking to have a wisdom tooth removed. Make sure you find a dentist who specialises in removing wisdom teeth and who takes what I believe is called a CBCT scan, which will show how close the trigeminal nerve is to the wisdom tooth. This will allow the dentist to determine the best extraction method and also determine the risks of catching the trigeminal nerve, if any.

In any case, if someone has trigeminal neuralgia and suspects an impacted wisdom tooth, I would get this scan done as a priority.

For TTTS... Any hopeful things to be done? Or just anti-anxiety meds?
