Introducing Tinnitus Quest

For those interested in getting involved in Tinnitus Quest, we would first like to say that we appreciate any and all support.

At the moment, we are aiming to build a stronger presence in the UK and France. If you have any knowledge of these markets, whether through communities, organizations, researchers, or even companies that may be interested in working with us, please contact us at info@tinnitusquest.com.

Only together can we be strong and create real change. We look forward to your support in the quiet revolution.:)

The next one (with Dr. Sarah Michiels about somatic tinnitus) is already this Thursday, April 3rd, so be quick!

Because we value high participation rates, we will raffle one 100 EUR/USD/GBP Amazon Gift Card amongst those who stick around for at least 30 minutes! :)

Can we reach $10,000? If so, a generous donor has pledged to give another $10,000.

I've been sharing this around and have asked a few people with some social reach to help, but I've noticed it is actually quite difficult to find on the main Tinnitus Quest webpage.

It would be really great if we could raise that last $5,000 with a strong final push.

Me too. It is difficult, which shows what we are up against. The number of sufferers out there does not currently translate into financial support.

The options for becoming a regular supporter start at as little as a couple of pounds per month.

Once I have an income again, I'll be sure to set it up. I need to make my savings last for now, but I've donated what I can.

I've been trying to get a couple of well-known musicians interested. I used to do some work for a small company that collaborated closely with a few of the bigger acts from the 80s and 90s. I'll admit I'm not holding out too much hope, but I'm trying to aim high.

Surely there must be some writers among us who could get a gripping tinnitus story published in a newspaper.

It's just a bit frustrating when we're mostly talking among ourselves and family, all while working with a limited pool of cash. Awareness is going to be ninety percent of the battle. I always think of that bloody ice bucket challenge. Maybe if we could get a viral micro suction challenge going among celebrities, we might quickly attract some rich new members.

One reason it would be great to reach the $10,000 is also because of the symbolism. Big victories start with small wins. And who knows, it might even bring some bonus publicity in the local newspaper or elsewhere if Jocelyn reaches his goal.

It will be difficult, but not impossible. I've already donated and could do so again in a couple of days for a final push.

Hey @Scruffiey, it looks like you are very motivated to help us, which I think is great. Would you like to talk more via e-mail?

If so, you can contact me under tim@tinnitusquest.com :)

That's brilliant! Every dollar makes a difference. I hope we can make one final push. Together, we are many, and as we begin our grant program, I believe trust will grow and we will be able to achieve more and more.

Please take a moment to visit our website. We are completely transparent, and we understand that tinnitus, in particular, has lost a great deal of trust over time. We are affected too, and it is only because we are so frustrated with the current lack of treatment options that we have poured so much heart and soul into Tinnitus Quest.

Only by working together can we bring about real change.

Hi there,

Thank you so much for following this campaign, and a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has sent kind words and donations. Your support truly means a lot. Alongside @Hazel and @Markku, I have been helping to bring this campaign together, and it has been a pleasure to work on it.

Jocelyn is a wonderful lad whose efforts come not only from a genuine desire to help others, but also from his own personal experience living with tinnitus. His dedication is inspiring.

As you rightly pointed out, the importance of this campaign goes beyond the impressive amount raised so far. The last time I checked, it was close to $5,000, which is amazing. It also carries a powerful symbolic message. As we know, there are millions of us around the world living with tinnitus. If this campaign, and others like it, can spark a sense of unity and motivation within the community, that momentum can lead to real change. Even just showing that we are not alone, that we are in this together, is incredibly powerful.

Thank you again for your support.
Jack

Thank you, Jack, for all that you do. I plan to remain a donor for life, but just as importantly, I will be participating in research efforts through an ATA-funded study at UT Austin here in the United States. The study focuses on auditory gating in tinnitus and hearing loss and is part of the global TIDES study.

The growing prevalence of tinnitus among younger generations, as seen in cases like mine (age 32), Jocelyn's, and Tim's, signals a concerning shift in the age of onset. While tinnitus has traditionally been associated with age-related hearing loss, it now demands a fresh perspective and innovative solutions. We need to modernize our approach by engaging younger voices—from researchers and artists to social media influencers on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram—to better address this evolving challenge.

Many millennials and younger individuals, myself included, experience tinnitus or hyperacusis despite having normal audiogram results. This is often linked to what has been called "hidden hearing loss," and it highlights the urgency for new research approaches. To make real progress, we must combine the foundational work of early pioneers with fresh insights from younger generations who are motivated to develop better solutions.

This calls for increased collaboration across disciplines, including otology, neurology, and psychopharmacology, to create more effective resources and treatments for future generations.

Wow, we reached it?! 😲

It seems like someone donated more than $3,000 to eventually bring the total to $10,000. That is absolutely incredible. A million thanks to that person, and of course to everyone else who contributed. Also, huge thanks to Jocelyn and everyone who helped set up this campaign. This is amazing.

With successes like this, there is honestly a lot to be optimistic about for the future.

Well, that was unexpected!

Hooray for William R., whomever that may be.

Forgive me if this has already been mentioned in the thread, but have you considered reaching out to Texas Roadhouse? They regularly donate to tinnitus-related causes because of what happened to one of their former CEOs.

Yes, we've been trying, but so far no luck. Typically, to reach the right person at a big organization like that, you need a personal introduction from someone, rather than cold calling or emailing. But we'll keep trying.

WE DID IT! 🎉 Thanks to incredible support from around the world—and one amazing last-minute donation—we've officially hit our $10,000 fundraising goal for Jocelyn's London Marathon campaign.

It all started with Jocelyn, a 22-year-old from London living with tinnitus, who took on the challenge of running the London Marathon to raise funds for Tinnitus Quest.

Now that we've hit our goal, our anonymous donor is doubling the amount... bringing us to a stunning $20,000 raised for tinnitus research!

To every single donor from across the globe—thank you. This is what the tinnitus community can achieve when we come together.

If you'd still like to get involved, donate, or learn more about our work, visit https://tinnitusquest.com :)

And don't forget to sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop on all the good work we are doing.

Tinnitus Quest is a patient driven, global nonprofit focused on funding research to find better treatments to silence tinnitus once and for all.

Jocelyn—you've inspired us all. Good luck this weekend. The whole tinnitus community is with you! 🏃 💛

First, let me express the hope that this is not off topic.

I live in the provinces in a place that is no one-horse town, although it has been trying to call itself a city for the last 1000 years or so. Nevertheless, along with a city hall, hospitals, fire brigade, a university, and so on, it also has about ten charity shops.

Two are for cancer,
one is for the blind and vision impaired,
two are for enabling people with disabilities to integrate,
one is for the Vincent de Paul Society, focusing on the homeless and others in need,
one is for orphaned children,
one is for victims of the Chernobyl disaster,
one is for people with Down Syndrome,
and one is devoted to Africa's self-help efforts.

The business model is both brilliant and simple.

Someone in the family dies of cancer, for example. The family members keep a few sentimental items and discard the rest. One of them decides to donate the remaining items — books, clothes, household articles — some used but still very good, to charity. Well, why not to the Conquer Cancer Charity?

The charity shop might incur some small costs for collection, storage, steam cleaning, and repairing of the clothes. However, since they are second hand items, they are free of sales tax (also called value added tax). As a charity, it is exempt from income tax. Some well off workers also donate their time for free. The environmental damage from this process is almost nonexistent.

In short, it is a money spinner. Compare this with a model where all the items would be transported directly to Africa. The tonnage, the time, the transport and shipping costs, and the marketing would all add up. It is much easier to sell in the golden West for hard currency and donate the proceeds. African tailors and shoemakers will also not be put out of work.

Long story, pretty abrupt conclusion:

Why is it that the hearing disabled (including tinnitus and hyperacusis) have not set up a chain of charity stores?

If the charities for the blind, cancer, the disabled, the homeless, Down Syndrome, Chernobyl victims, and others are all up and running, perhaps the train has already left the station for the hearing disabled. We never heard about it. Eh?
