22 years ago... I was more of a wild and crazy social party guy--tinnitus and hearing loss have severely restricted my social, personal and hobby related life and made me more depressed, withdrawn and in a constant state of grief over my deteriorating hearing and increasing tinnitus.... It's restricted my ability to meet new people and connect with existing ones.

      Anyone can relate?

      Dave

I feel the same way :( I want my old life back! I have isolated from the social life I used to have, now I spend my time with my family, the only support I need right now.

Same here and I am 28. I got T when I was 27 and felt like life ended for me. This is mere survival now.

Hi Dave, loads of hugs to you :huganimation:Your hearing loss along with the T must be very tough. I’ve had T for 16 years, I was only 28 when I started on this journey. It’s been up and down emotionally for me ever since.

Did your hearing loss happen same time as your T started or more gradual?

      Hi,

To everyone here, as my GF keeps saying, 'you aren't dying', so time to do some of those mental gymnastics humans are so good at (think Eric Cartman, it's never his fault :) ).

No but seriously, this royally sucks, and there's no need for it. I hope that jumping on the meditation bandwagon will grant me the inner peace I seek; anybody have any success in that?

I find that learning that it'll always be there (that I can't escape it), is most realistic, and in that, it's the best way to cope. If you can get a good night's rest, and then habituate to get rest, you are golden, we all hope we'll get there one day, and until then, know you are not alone, and hang on.

      Good luck to all.

      Kind regards,

      Michael Barton

Who am I kidding, its got to be noise :/
Was 18 when this started, three years later and it's already worse. Never been to a concert in my life, and was not into clubbing nor did I wear headphones regularly. One less than 10minute exposure at a club followed by a house party/gathering three years later was what did it for me.

Now its moderate (hear it everywhere) tinnitus, visual snow, floaters, headaches, jaw pain and depression. Light bothers me, sound bothers me. Needless to say, I don't leave the house too often anymore. I used to enjoy going for walks, to the park and reading. Now its enough for me to see the visual snow on a white sheet of paper and my mood instantly tanks.

I hope for some kind of help or treatment to come around. I am not managing to habituate, despite being in this situation for close to two years (when my increase happened). This is not how I was hoping to start my 20s.

I don't see a future anymore. Went from being a high performer academically and participating in extracurriculars to trying to survive day to day. It's hard to find joy when I can't see or hear properly.

As far as personality goes, I am but a shadow of my past. I don't even manage to do half of what I used to do. I feel different, worse. If tinnitus and visual snow went away I'd be extremely happy, but I still think I'd be a changed person.

Lucky for your girlfriend she doesn’t have tinnitus because it would be a short sharp lesson in learning that there are far worse things in life than dying.......Good luck with her.

      Hey @Bam ,

I hate to say that I tthink you are right because I'm finding this thing harder each day to cope with.

I hope she'll come around and realize this may be the beginning of the end for whatever she hoped we'd 'be', since there won't be a whole lot of 'fun' left.

It feels like I'm surviving now more than anything, and I don't like it.

It's breaking me, and for the first time I'm wondering, if I'll want to go on till the end like this... :(

      Good luck today, everyone.

      M

      Hi Michael
I practice deep relaxation and meditation every morning. (In a lovely warm bath.)
It doesn’t cure Tinnitus I’m afraid, but by practicing ‘hearing’ T (not listening to it), and learning to relax deeply and meditatively, at the same time, I believe it helps me to desensitise myself to it, a bit like aversion therapy with spiders.

{{{{{ SHIT }}}}} did somebody mention spiders!!!

It is a tremendous help to me.

Throughout the day I still hear my ‘T”and obviously I dislike it - but there are also times when I hear it and don’t care about it,
      because it’s not bothering me.
It has helped me turn my
‘Active Sufference into a more Passive Sufferance.’
I used to be paralysed by it,
but now I am at least operational.

If you like I’ll PM my methods to you.
Whether it will work for you, of course, I don’t know, but it may give you something else to think about.
      Very best wishes buddy,
all of this is such a crying shame Michael,
      I truly know,

That’s drastic Michael. I think you want her to just come round to supporting you instead of belittling what you’re going through.......Remember it’s early days. This could all be over next week.

You had the right attitude earlier to confront this thing and kick its ass to the rear. You will win and be ok. Loose the fear of it and gain your life back.

Yes. The reality of true severe tinnitus is all right here.

I have survived it now some decades plus later. I hope that gives strength to some. It seems impossible.

Hyperacusis has all the components of what makes Trigemminal Neuralgia so affectionately nicknamed 'The Suicide Disease'. Talking, hearing: two things necessary to connect with people are taken from you, leaving you isolated. When you are in pain you need support of company but it's left out of reach. Pair that with severe tinnitus, like so many members here. It's life altering in a huge way. Any one of these can be isolating alone and yet how many of us have all three?

Hyperacusis, Tinnitus, Hearing Loss. The holy trinity of loneliness.

Of course it's depressing. There's nothing good about tinnitus or hyperacusis, especially not when you have both.

I had tinnitus for as long as I can remember. Got bad later.
I'm autistic, so learning how to act normal and socialize is a must. Unfortunately what I did to my ears made that harder, and I have phases of depression. However, I am optmistic that I can handle reverse some of the damage in the near future.
