- Cause of Tinnitus
- possibly too high thyroid medication
Hello,
I've had tinnitus for several years now and have tried just about everything, but nothing has worked. Recently I had a blood test, and my TSH levels came back really high, at 35.1 (normal range is 0.27–4.2). I've had hypothyroidism since birth, so I've always had regular blood tests. I never had tinnitus as a child or through most of my life, and my TSH has never been this high before, especially not with my T4 still within the normal range.
I looked up possible causes for TSH being so high while T4 is still normal, and one of the results mentioned a pituitary tumor. It also listed fluctuating hearing and tinnitus as related symptoms.
So I'm wondering if anyone here has developed tinnitus that turned out to be due to a pituitary tumor? If so, could you describe what the tinnitus sounded like? For example, was it the constant hissing type, the "alarm in the distance" type that comes and goes, or the pulsing/heartbeat type? Did it affect one side only, or both?
I'm mainly looking for some comparison with my own symptoms so I can be a bit more emotionally prepared if they tell me I need a scan to check for one. For now, they've just adjusted my medication dose, and I'll be repeating the blood test in six weeks. In the meantime, I thought I'd do a little research.
Thanks.
