Hi everyone,

I'm a bit nervous to write this as I know most comments here suggest habituation, which is great, but I am just not at the point where I can consider that at the moment, but I'm desperate and am looking to share my story to hear your thoughts.

So, I had completely normal hearing and ears about 8 days ago. About 2 weeks ago I decided to try some breathing techniques, they often involved breathing through the nose. My nose was constantly clogged and I could barely get air through but I kept trying, unfortunately.

About 5 days in, my ears felt like they were clogged and needed to pop. The next day, the popping feeling was gone but throughout the day I noticed a ringing sound. Sometimes it feels more external and other times it feels like it's coming straight from my brain. It's never too loud, but loud enough to scare the hell out of me. It is not constant whatsoever, it comes on a few times a day though at least. For the first 3 nights I would wake up in the middle of the night and it would be quite loud. Lately, I have been falling asleep and sleeping half decent. When I wake up it's usually low, but it's also usually present, and then goes off and on throughout the day - I think it changes with the environment I'm in. Sometimes I can sit in silence, sometimes the ringing starts.

Also, when I am around certain other noises, such as fridges, heaters and random pipes that make noise throughout my apartment or the school library I can hear crickets in the background. The noises from the fridge, heaters, pipes are also making consistent noise, but it sounds like it's a rhythm to me. Again, it's not loud per se, but hearing it is very distressing, annoying and terrifying. The crickets can also come when in silence, but I definitely notice them more when around some sort of constant machine sound (It's hard to explain, I'm sorry). I have also (rarely) heard hissing and faint beeping sounds.

I have no hearing loss at all or pain in the ears. Also, I no longer feel pressure in the ears.

I went to a walk-in doctor's clinic (I will get a specialist as soon as possible - but it appears that these take a long time) and he checked my ears and said there was no wax. He looked up my nose and said that the sinuses in both nostrils were swollen. He thinks that forcing myself to breathe through my (inefficient) nose built-up pressure, which may have resulted in fluid build-up behind the ear drum.

He prescribed me a steroid nasal spray as well as Claritin to decrease the swelling. He said this will take 1-2 weeks. He believes that another 2 or so weeks later, the pressure and/or fluid will decrease and my hearing will go back to normal.

I wanted to get some opinions on here. I am very scared and nervous. Praying this is not permanent and that the doctor is correct.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks so much.

Welcome to the forum. Clogged ears may suggest fluid, earwax buildup or ETD. Since you have a sinus problem which seems to trigger the tinnitus, it is a good chance that once the problem is fixed then your tinnitus will fade away.

Do some deep breathing and relaxing exercises to calm your anxiety. Stress and anxiety are not good for tinnitus. They can trigger or aggravate it. So try your best to stay calm and get the sinuses and ears checked out.

Take good care. God bless.
