Hi everyone!

I have a question about using earplugs. I may or may not have some kind of condition in my ears, causing my tinnitus to be a bit worse right now. I have not had it confirmed yet, and is still waiting to get an appointment at the hospital. However, I read somewhere on this forum (I haven't been able to find that post again, sorry) that it might not be a good idea to use earplugs if there is some actual condition.

What do you guys think? I've used those silicone ones while doing something that's a bit louder, do you think I should keep doing that or is it best to stay away from earplugs for now?

Hi @Imshael

Earplugs have their uses but shouldn't be used unnecessarily as overuse can lower the loudness threshold of the auditory system. Please click on the links below and read my posts. Start with Hyperacusis, As I see it.

All the best

Earplugs might make hyperacusis worse from what I heard because the brain tells the ear to becomes more sensitive to noise when deprived of input so don't over do the ear plug thing. Just stay away from really loud decibel levels and you honestly should be fine. No need be paranoid about it. ;)

I don't see the harm in protecting your ears when "doing something louder". Your question isn't about overprotection which would be using earplugs even in silence and for long durations of time.

Thank you @Michael Leigh and @Contrast about your input on overusing. I've had that in mind while using them, but I do confess that I'm probably a bit paranoid at the moment because of the fear of it getting worse, so thank you for reminding me though.

As @lapidus said, I mainly use them while using such things as noisy kitchen-machines or vacuuming. When I went to the helth centre she could tell that my eardrums was a bit irritated and swollen, and therefore I wasn't sure if I should use the earplugs at all.

Thank you for your time!
