Cause of Tinnitus
ear infection
So I've been on here for a month now. I suffered an ear infection which ruptured my ear drum and three days later I developed T.

I have been talking to many on this site and following everything they say and my T has gotten better. I do have spikes every day but they taper off as opposed to one constant loud spike which was my fist two weeks with T.

Well now I have a sinus infection and I was prescribed amoxi-clav which I thought was safe. I just ate dinner (low sodium bacon and eggs) and took an amoxi-clav and I just had a major spike. I know it's not from the infection because my ear was calm all day and the T was mild.

I'm so confused, I have 9.2 days worth of antibiotics to take and I am petrified. I'm hoping the spike passes and then I can continue the antibiotics and expect a spike for a few hours. This is so frustrating!!!

I would talk to your doctor to see if there might be something else you can take besides antibiotics. In some cases, infections resolve on their own if left alone though it would take longer. Definitely though talk to your doc. It's worth asking if there are non-antibiotic options. Even the antibiotics that are supposedly non-ototoxic can cause ear problems.

@racerfish Thank you so much for responding. I actually agree about trying to make due without antibiotics but my face got swollen from the infection and I rushed to see my ENT. He recommended ||I get on these antibiotics which shouldn't affect my ears or trigger my tinnitus. I have chronic sinus issues and I do everything I can until it gets to the point I need antibiotics. Again I appreciate the response and in a few days if I feel a major difference I may just stop the antibiotics.

If you continue taking antibiotics, ask your doctor about taking magnesium and NAC supplements.

I keep hearing about NAC and Magnesium and its something I have to start. I am currently taking probiotics, lipo-flavanoid and I stopped taking Ginko because I thought it was doing more bad then good. Do u suffer from tinnitus?

I have some kind of infection also and have been taking high doses of amoxicillin with no problems. The only spikes I get are at night in my sleep. I do know now that certain fans irritate my left ear causing it to ring more. So tonight I am sleeping with rain sounds instead of the fan. Anyways hope you are feeling better.

I actually stopped taking the meds, they were making my T out of control. I'm trying to deal wit the infection with more natural methods, hoping it works. Thanks @hopeforme, people like u and all those on this site who support each other make dealing with this a lot easier

I know prednisone made my anxiety up the roof. same just say my husband left to work in the morning and came back..I was still in the same position curled up in a ball. Worst worst worst days of my life. So if you feel meds are making you uncomfortable definitely stop taking them.

I've had a few of those "worst days of my life" since an ear infection gave me T a month ago. At times my anxiety is out of control where I am crying like a child. I am slowly getting better and talking to people here for support is the number 1 reason and of course the decrease in volume and spikes is a pretty big factor. If you're ever feeling like that feel free to messege me, even though I may be having a hard time I will be here to give positive encouragement and it may help us both out.

It was a combination of amoxicillin and a tetanus shot that started my tinnitus.
@Michael B I'm sure the infection and hearing loss were one of the reasons for my T but I think it had more to do with the antibiotics Avalox and Ciprodex that couldve caused it. My T was out of control and slightly calmed down once I stopped with the antibiotics. I guess its hard to say what the cause is and my ENT is more concerned about the ear then the T

ciprodex is definitely ototoxic. Cipro is bad juju

@linearb my whole ordeal started a month ago from an ear infection. My T started a few days after my ear ruptured so I'm pretty sure its from the cipro and the avalox although I'm hoping its from the hearing loss which is slowly getting better. Who the heck knows.

I would be suspicious of changes to gut flora/fauna causing problems. @racerfish there is some research out there showing how specific strains of probiotics can impact brain function; you might want to try to really rebuild your gut flora.
I'm taking a probiotic now, but I don't really see any difference in anything so will probably stop when the bottle runs empty.

@racerfish I feel for you my friend. You are a regular on this site and are always willing to help people. I wish there was some info I could give you to help you out but I'm still a newbie.
Many thanks @ChrisfromCanada . I think for now it is what it is. I just need to deal with the hand I've been dealt and try to keep living life.

Chris,

Several years back I had a very bad reaction to Amoxi-clav antibiotic. Everyone is different with these medications. My reactions were severe gut issues/increased nerves. I called the dental office and explained my situation the next day. They said basically "it is impossible and you must have taken the medication wrong".

I knew myself well. My husband rushed me to my regular doctor who prescribed a different antibiotic. The severe symptoms went away.

Moral of this: If you feel in your "gut" that something is not right don't wait or doubt it. Get help to change the prescription.

I also take a probiotic when taking antibiotics. The suggestion came from my general doctor.
