Spike from Live Music... Very Upset

I was hoping to avoid having to come back here for some time, but here I am again. It happened Saturday night. Ended up at a restaurant where they had live music though I thought it wouldn't start until after we had finished. I was annoyed because I told the person I was with I didn't want a loud place for dinner and he just told me my ears could handle it fine.

Anyway, as we were wrapping up the singer was finishing up a loud song which literally hurt my ears. I was fine until the following evening, and my T doubled in intensity.

I don't know if I just live with this and hope it goes away or try to rush to see an ENT to get Prednisone. I've taken magnesium and NAC supplements but don't know if those will help. For the first time last night in a long time, I was unable to sleep much because the T was so loud. I feel like I'm back where I was 11 years ago when I very first got T.

Any advice? Words of wisdom? I'm at my wits end with this T.

 

I could be wrong..but i measure everything in DB. If you were at this place and the music was at 85 to 90Db, then your ears could handle it. I think hearing damage can and will lead to your tinnitus getting worst. I think you may just be experiencing a spike in your T.

I have a DB meter on my iphone and measure the loudness. I still may have some H and sensitivity but thats ok..as long as i know that i am not further damaging my ears...

 

@fishbone thanks for the info. I just started to use "Decibel 10th" on my phone and seems to work well. I found that on a plane, it registers anywhere from 80-85 db while in flight (though my app isn't calibrated so could be off). I agree with you that 85 db is probably safe given that's what my app records in an airplane. If it weren't, then all the flight attendants and frequent fliers would be on here complaining about their airplane induced T.

With the music I experienced, the volume was reasonable at first, but the singer hit a few notes at the end that felt like were definitely above 100 db, but I didn't have my meter on. I guess only time will tell. Hopefully, I'll get in to see a specialist this week. Am keeping my fingers crossed.

Since my bad experience with antibiotics last summer, I've also developed mild hyperacusis, so my ears are still adjusting and trying to figure out what "safe" sound levels are though it seems with time that threshold is decreasing.

 

Hard to say what level of sound you were exposed to since you haven't measured it and we weren't there..My guess is live music in a restaurant can't be as loud as a concert, but we also have different tolerance ( possible also physical tolerance ) to noise, so hard to say..it can just be a temporary spike..how long have you been exposed ? oh, those people who know better what our ears can stand than us really dirve me mad. Never , ever, listen to them - we know better, it's us who will suffer afterwards, not them. Prednisone is not necessarily helpful and is not neutral to your body, but if you're really, really worried , maybe visit a ENT ? Are you any better today?

 

@Gosia Thanks for asking. My spike is about the same today. The exposure to the music was about 20 minutes, but the end the levels were piercingly loud but only for a few seconds. My T has been ringing like crazy the past couple of days. I've never had a spike like this from sound before last this long and be this intense. My previous spikes have always been quite mild and just lasted a day so I'm worried that this may be permanent. I've got an appointment with an ear specialist tomorrow and a backup appointment in case I need another opinion for next week so I hope it goes well.

 

Sorry to answer only now ( I don't visit this forum everyday anymore ).. so how did it go ? Any better a few days later ? Tell me about it..I have a damn spike only from taking a tramway yesterday..First time in two years I took public transport for so long as an hour and T spiked . I asume it's temporary and just wait , but I feel you as well. Anyway, say how you're going, I'll come to check. I truly care.
