Hello everyone,
I've had tinnitus for a year now, and although I am coping much better—and sleeping much better too—I am still struggling with certain noises.
My tinnitus is not constant. By that, I mean it can shift quickly from a hiss to a ringing sound. One of the things that triggers these mini spikes is audio from electronic devices. For example, during phone calls, if I do not protect my ears or dampen the sound in some way, my tinnitus can jump from a level 1 to a 10 and stay elevated for anywhere between 20 minutes and two weeks. As an important detail, I stopped using headphones at the beginning of my tinnitus, and now I listen to everything at the lowest possible volume.
The problem is that all of my social life depends on computer calls. I recently moved to another country, and all my friends and family are far away. We talk every day, and I am getting really tired of experiencing spikes every time I try to socialize.
So I am here to ask a few things:
1. Is it possible to habituate to digital audio again? If so, how?
2. I think my phone speaker might be too harsh. Does anyone have suggestions for small speakers that might be easier on the ears?
3. I have considered using good-quality headphones again. Would it be wise to try them at low volumes for voice-only use? If so, I would also appreciate any product recommendations.
Thanks.
