Cause of Tinnitus
Noise induced - nightclub
I've had noise-induced T as of October and four days ago I went out on a date to a loud bar for 3 hours (my guess is 85-90Db). I stupidly decided not to wear ear plugs, even though I'm normally super careful with loud sounds. The reason for not wearing the ear plugs was because I find it quite hard to converse with people to the best of my ability when I've got ear plugs in, as their voices are a lot quieter than normal and I have to really struggle to listen to what they're saying. Of course, this being a date, I wanted to put my best foot forward, so I decided not to wear the plugs so I could hear her as clearly as possible.

It's been four days now and the T has spiked to an almost unbearable level. It's so loud now to the point where I can hear it over everything and it's ruining my concentration.:(

Really terrified that this is a permanent spike, is there a chance that this is just temporary?

Was it her idea to go to a loud bar on a date?
Next time tell the girl you want to hear her talk and enjoy a good conversation, take her to a nice, cosy bar with good acoustics.
If you have T, you really need to make some lifestyle changes so it doesn't get worse. Else you will just end up with regrets like now.
Hope your spike settles, keep us updated!

Sorry to hear about your current spike. Maybe you could try supplements like magnesium and NAC and see if that helps?

I think it will settle for you, just be careful.

Take care! :)

Its good that you didnt let T rule your life. But on the other hand keeping it under control is important. Dont risk your health too quickly.

Like I did, my situation is incredibly disgracrful. I bought a Spotify membership for 1 euro and got myself Tinnitus all because of listening to 80, 90db constantly. I sold my health for 1 euro. Can you believe that.

Now Im just here for a week with Tinnitus here, only hearing it in silent places and whilst trying to sleep. I just dont know what to expect. I wish someone experienced could give a verdict on my situation.

One way or the other, we have to take care of our problems and I wish you succes in dealing with yours!

I think at a week in you could be ok, just give it some time and keep away from loud noise for a bit.

Just don't listen to music too loud and use NAC + earplugs when you go out. I suggest you wait a bit before going out again though. (by going out I mean loud bar or concert)

Yes well I have never been a social person. The last time I was in a party was 1 year ago and I dont think I will ever go to one anymore.

1 month ago I had issues at home and felt emotionally unstable so I turned up music too loud with my phone for few hours just to forget my issues. At that time I didnt have Tinnitus.

Then 1 week ago after 15 hours of studying, headache and all, I turn up music, hear a peeeeeep... after 10 seconds, immediately plug headphones out and now im here.

Im very afraid because the tone is constant and hasnt changed this last week. One way or the other, I thank you both for your advice !

Yu only hear your T in silent places... Your T is very mild dude, don't freak out so much ;)

Avoid very quiet places for a bit, you will forget about it soon enough.

I am in the same boat as you today. Last night I went to a friends birthday party at a bar with loud music. Knowing it would be loud, but also not wanting to live like a hermit, I ventured out using all the precautions I could. I took oto-protective magnesium, limited my stay to 1 hour and I used earplugs. I monitored the total volume and according to my phone app it was only 80db... but I think that my phone was topping out and it was louder than that. Huge spike this morning. If it doesn't go by tomorrow might get prednisone as a last ditch measure to try to correct any damage that was done. Lucky I'm in my 40s and don't feel pressure to go out all that often (this was my first loud music bar since I got T in April) but it still sucks to be limited in this way. Last night was an experiment of sorts and it failed.

NAC is way more efficient than magnesium in terms of otoprotection.

Also phone volume meters are not very accurate unless you have an iPhone (not that the iPhone is better but the app developers can make sure it works well on it whereas there are a lot of different android phones with different mics)

I use sound meter by abc apps on Android and you can adjust the dB gain. So get a real dbmeter and calibrate it with the app on the phone. That way you'll get more precise value.

Yes sorry...
Just type NAC hearing loss on Pubmed and you'll see plenty. Not all are positive though. It is mainly antioxidants supplements that help noise induced hearing loss, but according to this study magnesium can help too: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24708640

Just take both to be sure...

@Sebastians yes it was her suggestion, and I went along with it as I felt like it would be a bit much to explain my T to her on a first date. My friends know about it though, and they're really understanding. I don't go to nightclubs any more because I'm afraid my T will get worse.
Yes keeping my fingers crossed that the spike settles!!

@Capricornus Hi! Hope you're well. Thanks for the suggestion, I haven't taken any supplements for my T so far so I really want to give one of these ago. I've heard a lot about the magnesium and its positive effects, haven't heard much about NAC though.

Which one would you recommend out of the two?

I have been taking magnesium since onset, and it tends to calm me down which I think is beneficial for the perception of my Ts volume. I haven't tried NAC yet, but I have placed an order so it will be delivered to me in the beginning of next week. I have been reading on this forum that magnesium + NAC can help with noise induced spikes, so I would definitely try both!

Good luck! :)

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself, you took all the precautions you could and it's completely understandable that you just wanted to have a good evening. Seems like T is just very unforgiving in this way!

I've had quite a few small spikes which have occurred even when I've got 33Db ear plugs in. Definitely making some lifestyle changes now by not spending much time in loud places, like yourself. Finding it difficult though to strike a balance between being as sociable as I can (at university currently) but also trying to reduce the risk of a spike!

Since you protected yourself a lot yesterday, I think there's every chance your T will return to its baseline. From past experience, all my spikes have returned to the baseline when I've taken the proper precautions.

The thing about T is that the more attention you give it, the louder it becomes so it is quite possible that simply by putting yourself in a place where there is a risk, you will pay more attention to it because you are worried about doing damage and cause a T spike even though there wasn't any real damage.
