Hi All,

Its early days but I wanted to tell you my story so far and what I hope will be a positive outcome.

I am a 42 year old male and I had been slowly losing hearing in left ear over the course of a few months. Not quite sure when it started but it wasn't that pronounced. Oddly had been meaning to go to the doctor last week but as usual got caught up with other things.

Anyway I had a dizzy spell on Saturday and thought it might be a blocked ear so I put some eardrops in. Later I went to the pool with the kids. There was a fuzziness in my ears so I dived underneath (Its only 1.4m) to try and clear it.

Later in the night I put earphones on but realized I couldn't hear anything in my left ear. Went to the doctors the next day and I didn't even realize he was clicking his fingers. He sent me straight to ER. No ENT on call so went back the next day. That night however I woke with the most unbelievably loud noise in my ear. Had heard of Tinnitus before so immediately knew what it was and I freaked out as I often read it was not curable. Don't mind saying I cried like a baby for the first time in about 20 years.

The ENT sent me for an MRI. All clear. On Wednesday he started with the steroid injections into my ear. The tinnitus was very reactive so oddly I was more relieved to have quiet than be in loud areas. White noise seemed to help a lot but it very much a case of just trying to breathe through it and wait for it to subside when it did peak

One of the scariest parts was my Daughters voice seemed to really irritate it. As I am sure many of you are aware the thoughts of this for life are the scariest parts. I went to a shopping center on Friday and it was like somebody had turned up the volume to unbearable levels and there were so many different sounds that I could not understand. The ENT explained this was called "recruitment" basically where you are perceiving sounds louder than they are.

Like most of you I spent hours on the web looking for answers, trying to stay positive. I came across some threads that helped me a lot, this one in particular. https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/my-tinnitus-is-completely-gone.16169/

I also emailed neil@hearinglosshelp.com on Saturday who amazingly came back to me that day and mentioned to below therapy from home. http://hearinglosshelp.com/blog/constraint-induced-sound-therapy-for-sudden-sensorineural-hearing-loss/

So I went out on Sunday bought headphones and earplugs. My tinnitus had eased off a little only really spiking during louder moments. It felt like a mild hum (fuzz) and like crystals popping in my ear. It had a constant tone but fortunately I could concentrate on the crystals at night which weren't so bad. I have been waking at 5 each morning with a loud pitch.

AT this stage when I had the earplugs in I could not hear anything and the music playing (only in my left ear) was barely recognizable . The worst part was still the recruitment and it was making me afraid to go out.

I also bought magnesium and tebonin tablets (got that from the above thread).

So visited the ENT today for another hearing test. Tinnitus felt a bit more manageable in the louder environment but still there. Hearing test showed no improvement. This was after 4 injections and the doctor thought it would not help to do any more. He discussed using a hyperbaric chamber so I decided to go for it.

Quite nerve racking having the helmet on in the chamber but after a while you relax.

My family picked me up later and I wasn't sure if I was kidding myself but their voices seemed so much clearer. I put another ear bud in my good ear and yes i could definitely hear them better. No reaction to my tinnitus from the talking either but still a mild hum. Had to get home and test it out and yes I could actually hear the tone of the songs and at much lower volume. Nowhere near perfect but much improved. Hard to tell how the tinnitus is from doing the therapy but I have been more or less been able to focus it out of my mind for the moment

Don't know if it was just the chamber or a combination of all things but I guess the main reason for my thread is to encourage everyone to stay strong. People usually only post when something goes wrong but from what I can see loads of people recover from this in various ways. I may relapse but for now I'm positive,

Will keep you updated.

Hello Derek,
Welcome to TinnitusTalk! I had sudden and complete hearing loss in my left ear in 2013. Doctors said it was probably caused by a virus (but I did not feel sick). I still have great hearing in my right ear.
I appreciate your inclusion of the thread regarding CIST. I haven't heard of it before. It is too late for me to try this but I find the concept interesting. I am a little confused though as to how it could work with someone who has zero ability to hear in one ear. In my case, I am relying on plasticity to help me ignore the T - not to recover any hearing. I was never offered treatment with hyperbaric chamber. It seems that your doctors are a bit more responsive than mine were and that is good.
I think you are doing really well under the circumstances. You seem to have a decent handle on the anxiety issues that can come with sudden hearing loss and tinnitus onset. I really struggled with anxiety in the beginning but I am now fairly happy in spite of unwelcome changes in my life. For example, I know the recruitment in loud situations is going to happen but I don't dread it any more. I do limit my exposure to these scenarios but I don't fear them. My biggest issue is how my deaf ear feels. Do you have discomfort or pain in your bad ear?
I agree with you.....Stay positive! I try to focus on what I have in life, instead of what I don't have. I have one hearing ear, legs that can walk, eyes that can see, a warm home and a loving family. Thanks for joining and keep us posted. Best of luck to you!

Hi Lora

So of course my tinnitus was back with a vengeance last night. Guess I should be focusing on other things
Was also looking for a good book today for the Chamber and a motorbike went roaring by and I ended up with a lot of static noices in my ear. Not happy but let's see how these treatments go. Definitely going to stay away from loud noises for a while. I still have a bit of hearing in the ear by the way

Hi Dominic
In answer to your questions
It started only last week, on the 5th November
Hearing appeared to get better yesterday but today not sure yet. The loud noise from the bike appears to have regressed it a little but hard to tell.
When the T is intrusive it's hard to hear as it's like an echo chamber in my ear.
If I understand the term correctly yes to Aural fullness.
Just been through a shopping mall so it's roaring at the moment but it's still not as bad as the high pitched tone I had initially. Feels more like hissing, buzzing and crystals
What's your story?

I developed SSHL on 4/2/2016
Lost 50% hearing of my lt ear
I had intratympanic steroids and oral steroids
My T and hearing loss and aural fullness fluctuates
My anxiety is gone ( for first 2 months I was suicidal )
I also noted improvement and reversal of my hearing but it never was back to normal, the improvement decreases my T but it's short lived
Do you have a copy of your hearing test?
My word comprehension goes from 50 % to 86%
But it's usually bad occasionally better
7 month of hell
Dom

Hi Dominic,

Attached are my first hearing test and my latest one. There has been some improvement in the lower frequencies but I guess the high frequency sounds are never coming back. Like yourself the hearing has been fluctuating so the ENT thinks I may have Endolymphatic Hydrops although I have no dizziness.

The HBOT treatment didn't really help but the ENT had prescribed Betaserc and that seemed to help a lot with the T. I was off it for three days and the T came back bad again. He also prescribed Acetazolamide 250mg 10 days ago. Yesterday I got up suddenly and could not hear the T at all. It lasted for about 10 minutes until there was some loud noises. Then I went and gave a presentation and it came back strong although still not as bad as before. Not sure which of the medicines are working but will stop taking the Acetazolamide for a while (not a long term solution anyway) to see if it levels off.

Have changed my diet to low sodium and sugar. Oddly I had given up additional salt and sugar for a long time but I found out that during a recent extended stay abroad the food been prepared contained high amounts of added salt.

I am also seeing an Osteopath for a stiff neck (nothing bad) and trying to do exercise for the head, shoulders and neck.

Overall the T and recruitment is better and generally I can sleep at night although no more late nights for me and I am avoiding unnecessary loud places. Maybe its my body forcing me to look after it better but apart from the odd day of feeling sorry for myself life is generally good.

Hope you're feeling good too?

@Derek Cassidy
Good news I noted significant improvement in my hearing over the last 8 days(almost 9 months since SSHL) my blocked feeling and hypercusis gone, dizziness gone. My tinnitus is less intrusive and I can easily manage it.
I have been using an hearing aid and it's helping.
Hopefully I will continue to get better!
I am glad you are doing well
Your hearing test looks almost like mine,
And your symptoms are recent and you should recover.

@Derek Cassidy
Hi ! I am still doing well, it's now 10 days and my hearing is much improved and tinnitus is much softer.
I tried everything to get better including CBT, TRT, Acupunture, hypnosis, steroids, ginkgo, tumeric, etc.... only time helped!!
How are u?
Dom

@Dominic1955 ,
I am pleasantly surprised to hear of your recent improvements! I think it is uncommon for people with SSHL to recover hearing after nine months, so consider yourself lucky! Good for you!
