I had a bad night last night and had trouble getting to sleep and then kept waking up so I'm hoping putting it down here will help me accept it.
I don't remember the day but I first noticed it during the week of 13th of July. I woke up and my ears were ringing and felt sore, it was 60% right ear 40% left ear. After there was no change after 4-5 days I rang the GP and got a telephone consultation (due to COVID-19) and they gave me some Otomize spray as they thought it could be an inflamed external ear canal (otitis external). After about 5 days of use I woke up and the ringing was barely noticeable and I could only hear it when I plugged my ears with my fingers but the next day the ringing was back. I rang the GP again and they got me to come in so they could look in my ears and said it still looked inflamed and there was some wax buildup on my ear drums so they gave me some antibiotics and another spray to use. I also started to use olive oil drops for a bit over a week and looked at getting my ears syringed like they suggested. I went to get my ears syringed but they said there wasn't anything to remove from the ear drums so it seemed like the olive oil worked pretty well. After that nothing improved and after consulting my GP again I've been referred to an ENT.
The majority of the time its still 60% right 40% left with a continuous tone in my right ear that doesn't vary much and in my left ear it's mostly a continuous tone which changes volume and a sporadic chirping sound. I've also noticed that sometimes the sounds are flipped and swap ears for a bit. This usually happens after I've had a shower in the morning and afterwards the ringing seems worse.
After reading posts of the site I think it has most likely been caused from using headphones a lot more since I've been working from home and then got furloughed so I've been on my computer watching videos and playing games way more than I usually do just to pass time. I've always been careful about not listing to stuff loud and try to have the volume so it's just audible but I think I've been using them so much my ears were fatigued. I've drastically cut down on using headphones and am going to get some speakers instead.
The main thing that is effecting me is that I'm probably stuck with it now and I'm only 23 and what I will have to change so I minimise the risk of making it worse. And that is freaking me out the most. With the biggest thing being that I might have to stop riding motorcycles, which has become a de-stressor and kind of therapy for me. I've always used ear protection when riding so I don't know what to do.
