Cause of Tinnitus
Loud noise maybe
Hello I am new here. I just need to vent and get some support and advice, I feel so incredibly down about this. I have this incredibly loud tinnitus, sounding like a dentist drill drilling into a tooth inside my head and it is driving me insane. I got this 7 days ago, but in fact the drilling started 4 days ago after I visited a doctor. Before this I have been suffering from depression and stress for several years.

I should take it from the beginning. So I was watching Alien (great movie) on my computer with headphones on, my headphones had broken a bit so I had to ductape them together, audio was still fine but in hindsight I saw that audio leaked out from one of the sides. When I had finished watching the movie I saw I had cranked up the volume real high without noticing. The next morning I had a ringing in the ears, it wasn't that loud so I continued my day as normal, where I had to wear headphones again later. The next day it was still there so I got a bit worried, called a nurse-hotline and was told to use ear-plugs. Next morning I felt the plugs had helped me and that the noise came back a long while after pulling them out and it felt like I was getting better. Same day I went to the doctor downtown, saw a nurse who thought I had an ear-infection and that I was red, the doctor said he didn't see any and sent me home after poking in my ears, which hurt a lot. There were a lot of traffic and loud noises.

Next morning I waked up with this horrific dentist drill that had been added to the two already existing tones. I was going mad from it and the day after waking up with the new addition I went to a new specialist doctor, telling them my ears are hurting as well as I am having the tinnitus. They said they didn't see anything, did an audiotest where I had normal hearing, said it might be a viral infection but didn't take any blood test or anything to check and just sent me home. Now this feels like the intensity of the dentist drill tone has gotten even worse and my ears are hurting even more. And to that I also gotten a weird fluttering feeling in my ear, which I read might be the tensor tympani muscle going haywire. Only times I been able to sleep is having a clock laying on top of my ear.

This has litteraly ruined my life as of now and I have such problems sleeping, the sound is overshouting everything in calm instances, it is only when I had been downtown where there is a lot of noise that is able to almost drown it out, except for that dentist drill.

I am wondering if anyone have had a similair experience, if anyone have any advice for me? Did going downtown first time to the doctor destroy the healing process? I feel so desperate, I can't get any sleep since the clock-to-ear doesn't work now.

Welcome to the forum. I have true empathy for your suffering with your 'dentist drill' tinnitus. I don't know how to help. I can only share my experience with a 'dentist drill' tinnitus a few year back. But worse, I also had severe hyperacusis on top of that. My life was literally destroyed and relentless anxiety and panic attacks ruled my days and nights. I never thought I could survive this 'hell' of a life. But never say never. Today I live a normal, productive and absolutely enjoyable life. I am going vacation to the Orient in 2 weeks, T or no T, high or low. Couldn't do that before when T was new. But now, I don't give a dime to it and it has lost its tyranny over me. I wrote my success story like others do and if you like to check out some of the helpful strategies I have used to turn around my suffering, here is the link. Take good care. God bless.

Thank you so much, billie48. I read your story and it both horrified me and warmed my heart. It is amazing what the human mind is able to do, and filtrate out like that. I am real happy for you that you are able to enjoy your life to the fullest again! I have now had a different view on it all and I have managed to calm myself down. All this stress I created was making it worse. I think in a way reading all that helped me force the ringing to surrender some of its power, I don't feel as scared by it. I got refered to some tinnitus specialists, so I will be talking to them next time. So huge thanks from me to you, billie48. You enjoy your trip to the Orient to the fullest!

@Andromo
I am so sorry to hear about your struggles.
Billie48's story is very uplifting and a true success.
I think you firstly need to get your sleep under control. Everything is harder to deal with when you haven't slept.
I use a low dose of Remeron (Mirtazapine) - I turned a corner in my recovery once I could sleep without a benzo.
Time is your biggest friend here - your tinnitus may settle or go completely.
Try your best not to monitor it, use masking when necessary to distract you from the noise in your head.
This is a great forum with great people.
Welcome and stay strong!

Sorry for the late reply, I had a difficult time and was meaning to reply back when I got more update on it all. Thank you Samantha R. I appreciate your support and words to the fullest. It is true what you said about sleep. I managed to eventually accept it in a way, and I learned to treat it as a headache. That made miracles for me and I was able to fall asleep like a baby - without any distracting noise.

Although, some days ago all that was ruined. I got a new noise in my left ear, where I had most problem. A loud EEEE that makes it completely impossible for me to sleep. It almost feels like a joke to get a new tone added to my already existing 4 after I learned thanks to Billie48's story to cope with it all. I also realized I gotten significantly sensitive to noise, just typing on my keyboard hurts, and dropping a dice on a wooden table hurts even more.

It is as if my anxiety I learned to suppress bloomed up again all over, and soon it has been a month and instead of improving it gotten worse. Now I pretty much gotten into complete despair and feels this must be permanent now.

I have that dentist drill sound in my Right ear at all times.

I was doing pretty good with it for the last year and 1/2 until recently when it got louder and stayed there.

I'm going to remove salt from my diet completely and try Zinc and Magnesium Lysinate Glycinate Chelate supplements.

I'm not expecting a silver bullet but am hopeful that I can get the volume down again since this happened before..

I will post an update after a month of taking the supplements. -- Ginseng seems to help a little but not much..

Hang in there!
