      Hello all,

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I’ve had tinnitus for over 10 years but in December 2018 and the end of January 2019 I had some bad reactions to antidepressants that doubled my volume and possibly gave me me hyperacusis.

My spikes have been out of control the last few weeks and I don’t know why. I’m not exposing myself to any loud noises and am being careful about what I put in or on my body. Is this violent fluctuation normal?

I’ll have moderate tinnitus one day and very severe tinnitus the next day for a few days. Can small sounds like dropping a glass do this? Or everyday noise? Car horn honking etc? Driving a car?

Could hyperacusis develop months after my latest permanent tinnitus spike?

Should I put in some earplugs for a while when I’m outside and expose myself to noise in a controlled gradual way at home?

I’m getting very stressed about this, missed work etc. I don’t know what to do. Please HELP!

Any advice or info is welcome.
      Thank you.

Moderate noises used to give me spikes. Try protecting your ears even from the moderate noises for 2-3 months. Hopefully this will reduce the number of your spikes and then you will know what you need to do to avoid spikes...

Do you have a history of noise exposure? Loud cars, loud musics, loud headphones, loud work environment?

Really sorry to hear how those antidepressants have caused such bad reactions for you. Many others have reported the same. Have you thought about quitting them? -- There are other ways to successfully treat depression without taking those kinds of drugs. -- All the Best...

Yes I do have hearing loss as well this is the initial cause of my tinnitus and probably the kindling to my second spike.

Thanks for the reply. Any advice moving forward ?

      Hi @Lane
Thanks for replying. What are some ways to treat depression? Can you please give me some examples? Besides exercise, meditation, diet etc.

Nerves dying in the cochlea causing neuroplastic alteration isn't a mystery, however scientist finding cures sure is a difficult thing to be doing.

Let your ears rest, that's literally the best thing and avoid stress, CBT therapy until there finally are treatments in the near future hopefully.

When you are on medication your body and brain works differently because it's getting chemicals which it's getting used to. So if you are on antidepressive, those medicines increase your seratonin levels. When you quit your medicine your brain is no longer getting what it is used too and likes, so it starts to panic and sending out all kind of signals. Stress, depression, anxiety, diarrhea etc. This can also cause your T to spike up since your brain enters a panic mode.

When you calm down and your brain adjusts to the new reality your spike will disappear.

      Hey @Stu1983,

Sorry to revive this old thread.

I'm in a similar situation where my tinnitus is spiking violently. Coincidentally this has begun to happen as my hyperacusis worsend due to insane over-protection since February.

From what I can gather, you went through with sound therapy to treat your hyperacusis - how did it work out for you? Do you get less spikes now? Has your tinnitus improved since? Did the sound therapy cause spikes itself initially?

I just need to find a way to solve the hyperacusis without permanently increasing the tinnitus.

      All the best,
      Stacken
