When My Tinnitus Ear Has High Pressure, the Tinnitus Goes Silent

Hi everyone.

I got my tinnitus from loud car exhausts sometime ago. Although it is only my right ear.

I have noticed that if my right ear has high pressure like when an airplane is descending, the tinnitus in my right ear goes practically silent. If the pressure is released by holding my nose and blowing or it naturally popping from chewing or swallowing, the tinnitus returns.

Does anyone know if this is common with others or if this is something I can fix medically?

That's odd. I have a droning/conch shell type tone that is low in my right ear that I can modulate by inserting my finger about half a nail in and pushing upwards on my bone.

I have that exact thing as well. I also have some sort of low frequency Morse code that I can alter with my finger in my ear.

The middle of the head hiss sucks pretty bad occasionally, but I'm light-years from where I was a year ago.

I found out through some data yesterday at work that one of my customers was struggling with tinnitus and was able to give her some info and links to helpful stuff so that felt good. I think a lot of my friends and people around me are more aware of hearing protection and the condition which is nice.

 

That’s great! Helping others doesn’t cure us but definitely it feels nice knowing you can help prevent this BS for someone else. I try to do my part as well. I always try to protect my wife’s and son’s ears lol.

Yep, I have a lot of friends that shoot and do loud hobbies and I've made them irritatingly aware of this thing.

I recently had another pain hyperacusis setback. As I've always done during times like these, I'm doing hyperbaric oxygen treatment. After every treatment, my tinnitus is unbelievably quiet for about 5 minutes. It's not silent, but man, I'll take it. It's an expensive and short vacation, but it's bliss.

I've wondered why this happens myself. Very odd. I know a decent amount about the ear, but still it doesn't make sense to me.

 

Pressure changes the sensitivity of your hearing. Happens to me on airplanes. As the air pressure changes and the pressure in my ear increases, my hearing gets less sensitive. This has happened to me all my life. I first noticed it when using Walkmans when flying. As the air pressure changes I would have to turn up the headphones to keep the same perceived volume level.

Could something similar be happening with the tinnitus sound?
