Hi everyone,

This my first post on here, have been meaning to post for a while. Will try to keep this as brief as possible. I'm 33 and have had tinnitus for a number of years now and it never overly bothered me, in fact back in the early days of it, I found the sound of it comforting. The past week has been a different story. The sound of my tinnitus seems to have completely changed. I've had my fair share of the tinnitus spiking and then settling down. Usually it sounds like a hissing but lately it has been this dreadful shrieking. I've even been hearing a bizarre and also distressing laser like sound. This sound can occur rapidly and tends to startle me and I find it more distressing than the shrieking tinnitus.

I've had a number of tests recently and seen different specialists. I first had a blood test which was all excellent. Then a Balance and hearing test. That said I had some mild hearing loss, which didn't surprise me and there was some evidence of endolymphatic hydrops. So I was referred to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. He looked at my tests, had a look in my ears and he was sure I didn't have Miniere's disease. He sad I may have an underlying vestibular disorder, which I believe I do, but nothing worth treating. The other symptom I experience at times is what I think is a form of vertigo, being the earth seemingly moving under my feet. Sometimes it feels like the ground drops down, sometimes it feels like its rising up. This could also be a symptom of stress and anxiety on it's own, I'm not sure.

I will also add that I'm on the autism spectrum and have quite severe sensitivity to noise but have learnt to cope with it, however, I am convinced that I have developed hyperacusis, as many everyday sounds cause a moderate pain and discomfort to my ears. As I'm worried about this latest tinnitus episode, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit scared by it as I cannot understand why I am now hearing it like this. I am a very healthy person, do not drink alcohol, very limited caffeine, non smoker and eat a healthy diet. I am really hoping this shrieking and laser noise will seize somewhat and return to a more habitual tinnitus that I am used to. Does anyone have a similar experience? Thanks for reading.

Are you taking any medications right now?

No, not on any medications, which I forgot to mention. Haven't taken anything for years. Just vitamin supplements.
