Would Using a Subwoofer Be a Bad Idea for Someone with Hyperacusis?

If you were in my shoes, would you use a subwoofer?

I made the switch from headphones to bookshelf speakers a while ago. They have been pretty great for quiet listening and I feel like my ears have been thanking me.

However, I have been wondering, since (for the most part) I have been having very few issues with my hyperacusis with using speakers for watching movies and quiet background music, would adding a subwoofer be safe? I'm just looking for a little bit more oomph because I really like electronic stuff and I feel like it might make movies a bit more fun.

From what I understand, because the frequencies are very low, it can be easy to overdo it. However, I have also heard that having good bass makes lower volumes more 'full' and enjoyable. So I'm sort of at a loss here as to whether it's something I should really be considering.

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing? Is it safe considering my current issues? I don't want to make a regrettable purchase, or worse screw up my hearing any more.

I use a small (8") sub in my system, with no problems. Just don't crank it to earthquake-level volumes. It is the midrange frequencies that cause most noise-induced tinnitus. I keep my satellite speakers volume at about 65-75 dB's, and the sub speaker at a level that it is audible, but not overdone. I enjoy watching movies in 5.1, with this sub, as well. To go down lower, I'd need a larger sub speaker and more power which would probably disturb the neighbors.
