Wish it wasn't true but at some point that's the case. I remember in my freshman year I got knocked down a grade on a report about gun-control essentially because my philosophy professor didn't agree that I was against it. 1) Politics shouldn't be centerpoint in college. I should be writing on Epistomology or something. 2) He's a philosophy professor so he should know better. Just salty because that knocked me down to a B and ruined an otherwise perfect year.

 

This member's (grecianmad87) story is very informative, uplifting, and his habituation seems to follow a pattern that is somewhat common among tinnitus people.

 

I have it on good authority that citizens in the Soviet Union were subjected to less propaganda compared to the amount of propaganda that we are subjected to now. There is no difference as far as Western vs USSR newspapers and newscasts are concerned. However, there was less politics in cartoons and other programming for children in the Soviet Union, compared to what we have now in the West. Beginning in 1960s, most Soviet movies had some subversive, anti-communist messages for those who could read between the lines. This is not the case with Hollywood movies where the messaging is the same in the script and when one tries to read between the lines.

Once you recognize that you live in a version of USSR that is scarier than "USSR during the time period between 1960 and 1990", it won't occur to you to challenge authority. I already quoted George Orwell's 1984 several days, ago, but I feel that the text below will be helpful to you:

 

Yeah pretty much. Some soviet propaganda, despite being blatant propaganda was pretty comfy, like polygon and shooting range. That one attempt where they let Grapes of Wrath show because it "showed how awful the US is" but the Russians were impressed that even poor Americans could afford cars, was pretty funny.

Seems American propoganda isn't changing too much, mostly private. It's pretty blatant on stuff like Netflix or in theatres.

Only reason I think that is because these films are propaganda of a time gone by. Our propaganda is still relevant and with the attempt to persuade people to submit to existing conventions, which is pretty scary. At least on the news front, news coorperations like CNN and fox are dying out so that's nice.

 

Polygon and shooting range?

During 1970s and 1980s, the authorities showed many American, French, and Italian movies in USSR movie theaters. This might have contributed to the collapse. They are not going to make the same mistake again.

USSR had to end for their ideology to successfully spread to the West. Otherwise, it would always be possible to contrast the living conditions and the standard of living in the West and in the USSR. Now this is no longer a possibility.

What films are you talking about?

 

Shooting range and polygon are the films I'm talking about. They're Soviet era propoganda cartoons that were pretty good. Dare I say, properganda. I probably wouldn't think that if the USSR was still alive.

The grapes of wrath incident I believe happened in Stalinist USSR. In the 1970s or 1980s, I doubt the average Russian would have been too surprised. Incidents like that and glasnost totally contributed to the collapse. It was never sustainable.

 

I just watched Polygon on YouTube. (I've never heard of it before.) I like how the only reason why a cartoon for adults with similar ideas won't be made by Hollywood these days, is that normally their propaganda is more crude than that in that Soviet cartoon made in 1970s.

 

Lol! Yeah I've seen pretty much every adult cartoon out here. There's some amazing ones but seems like most are pretty crude and bad. There's some that wear that title well like South Park, 12 oz mouse, or Life and times of Tim, but most that follow this formula aren't gonna be very good.

Then you've got poorly animated stuff like Family guy that also clearly has a political agenda. Oh well.

 

Sorry, I was trying to say: "the only reason I can tell that THIS adult cartoon wasn't made by current year's Hollywood, is that the propaganda in Hollywood's creations is usually more crude than it is in this cartoon. Otherwise, Hollywood these days is trying to promote the same kind of ideas, only there is less emphasis on plot development and original ideas, and more emphasis on brainwashing (compared to this Soviet cartoon from 1970s)."

 

I just finished watching "the shooting range." The propaganda there was pretty crude. It almost reached the levels of propaganda in "In Time" (2011)

I thought the animation was pretty good actually. I haven't seen these movies yet. From what I gather on the internet neither were well received by those people. Most websites I saw and people I talk to didn't really like Elysium too much. Haven't seen much on in time though.

 

I was impressed with the animation in Polygon. (Thank you for telling me about it.) When I used the word "crude" I was referring only to the quality of the brainwashing.

 

Oh right yeah. Believe it or not I'm surprised how subtle it was (that's not saying much though). Most stuff in the Stalin days was "Russia good, America bad". We really weren't any better I guess.

Not just Russia, North Korean propaganda cartoons are more subtle than I would think they would be (again not saying much).

 

Adult cartoons that I still remember fondly are Ren and Stimpy, Ugly Americans, Brickleberry, and Rick and Morty. Am I forgetting anything? (In other words, do you remember any cartoon series that is as special as the ones on the list above?)

 

Never a huge fan of brickleberry but ugly Americans was great and I loved R&S growing up. There's so many great adult cartoons out there it's hard to make a list though. I think I made a small list of cartoons I like.

 

Back then America WAS better than USSR (by any objective standard), so it needed to be spelled out. Too bad that America is no longer there.

 

The person behind Yuko the Clown (a recurring character on the Howard Stern Show) was involved in Brickleberry. What more could one ask for?!

 

Reminds me way too much of family guy. There used to be a lot of hate for it on the internet until people watched it and realized it's not really bad. It makes sense because anything that follows a family guy style is bound to get hate from cartoon fans, regardless of quality. American dad is liked to some degree but it really had to fight for its popularity on the web.

Memes aside yeah it's really good. It just gets an irrational amount of hate because the fanbase it has. On the plus side at least the R&M hate that recently started is making Xavier renegade angel more popular.

Actually it's really weird. It's really really funny but it's just Mitch's humor too. People say it's like rick and north but I have no idea why. They're almost exact opposites.

Is the course with group final exams, a fourth year course?

 

Thankfully no. This is just regular chemistry. I took an easier class. Now the weird thing with this class is it's also an environmental chem class, so there's a lot of SJWs and the like in there, so I'm assuming it's not too academically serious. The serious classes I took this year like Physics didn't do this so that's nice.

No it's around second year. I'm late second year.

It is a specific major course though.
