I was putting a ceramic bowl into the microwave when it slipped and the side banged off the glass.

Could this make my tinnitus and hyperacusis worse?

It was loud and level to my face, less than a foot away.

      Of course it can.

Not permanently worse, perhaps a temporary spike, I'd say.

      No, usually not.
Usually, short sounds are far less dangerous than long term noise.

If you haven't experienced ear fullness or a T spike yet, that's a great sign. It might still happen sometime within the next 24 hours. If it does, chances are that it will be a temporary spike (but keep in mind that those temporary spikes can last 3days-3 months).

      Usually.

Obviously, standing next to a gunshot, explosion, firework, air raid siren is going to damage your ears.

But I'd rather be exposed to a plate dropping on the kitchen floor than, say, vacuuming without earplugs for 30 minutes.

Edit: Explaining my pov further, a 15 minute bus ride vs. misc noises accidentally exposed to at work, such as the sound of a baler, or metal racks dropped on the floor. The former saw significant improvement after only a couple weeks of eliminating while impulse noises I don't spike in reaction nearly as much anymore.

      Suppose it’s a gunshot? That’s short.
