Cool. No, I'm not from the UK, but some of my ancestors came from Wales. I'm a mix of Welsh/Norwegian/German (what we call "Heinz 57 catsup" in the states). Is Swansea the mountain range?

I've been stuck almost my whole life in the world's-flattest-and-most-orthogonal-city: Chicago, Illinois. Although it's flat here, we have some great architecture. Great pizza, too.

I have a question for a Welsh person: Do you people eat what we in the states call "pasties"? These are little, I suppose you would call then, meat pies. I think pasties originated in Wales (or Cornwall?).

The reason I ask is, one of my daughters will be going to college in the Upper Michigan, which is populated with a lot of old mining cities. For some reason the people up there love pasties. When we go there, we pick-up a box.

You asked "How's my tinnitus?". Still there. I think I understand the cause of tinnitus - but understanding tinnitus doesn't cure it. Hopefully I'll habituate in the next few months. It starts up in the morning when I watch the TV morning news.

In Finland we have pasties. They are delicious!

Bits of history quoted from Wikipedia:
"In some areas, pasties are a significant tourist attraction, including an annual Pasty Fest in Calumet, Michigan in late June. Pasties in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan have a particularly unusual history, as a small influx of Finnish immigrants followed the Cornish miners in 1864. These Finns (and many other ethnic groups) adopted the pasty for use in the Copper Country copper mines[45] About 30 years later, a much larger flood of Finnish immigrants found their countrymen baking pasties. The pasty has become strongly associated with Finnish culture in this area, and in the culturally similar Iron Range in northern Minnesota.[46]"

It seems Finns had their part in bringing pasties over to Michigan, too!

This is a fascinating Michigan connection! My wife is from Michigan, and she was also telling me that the UP of Michigan is largely Finnish. They love pasties up there. I love them too.

I understand that the Finns also love taking saunas. My dad really liked saunas when he was alive.

      Hi Karl

Yes we do have pasties and they are delicious, pasties are probably the most popular lunch box snack. Hot or cold they are delicious, you can get all sorts of fillings too.

OK,...now an important food question for you Brits and...(what the heck)...ALL of Europe, Scandanavia (especially Finland): Do any of you eat Mexican food?

On this side of the pond, we love our tacos, burritos and "crunch wrap supremes". Taco Bell is a major restaurant in the US. Inexpensive, tasty. Just wondering if there are any Taco Bell restaurants across the Atlantic.

We had a French foreign exchange student living with us, and she loved Mexican food when she was here.

Yes, I eat Mexican food, but calling Taco Bell a restaurant is awfully generous :) I don't go a lot on the bean..mush.. that normally comes with it, but all the other stuff is great.

lol.... Born and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne...now living outside of Toronto. I lived in St Louis for 3 years and I have to say...loved the Mexican food.... theres nothing like it here, or in Newcastle....but my favourite is fish and chips....and there was no good fish and chips in St. Louis, and Toronto is ok, but the UK has the best.

Yes. We are very much sauna people. Most Finns go to sauna at least once a week, many go two or three times. Some even daily!

And Mexican food is very popular. Tacos, burritos etc. Yum! Although there are no Taco Bells here. Many people wish there was, but no such luck yet...

My father loved saunas when he was alive. My parents divorced when I was a kid, and my dad moved to Colorado Springs. He built a house in Colorado Springs, which overlooked a vista. I once visited him there, and I saw that he had a little sauna in the bathroom.

A very interesting about the bathroom in his house: It had a full height exterior window against the shower which was a one way mirror. Nobody could see into the bathroom from the outside. It was a little bit unnerving taking a shower.

Penny - I am not from the UK. I am from Iowa. Want to know about your dog. Looks like an English Springer Spaniel. My Springer, Julia, died six months ago. She was my best friend and companion for over 10 years. I miss her deeply. She was a beautiful creature. I loved her and will never forget her.

Hi, I believe pasties originated in Cornwall. the pastry then was very hard and was more for wrapping the contents and not meant to be eaten. That way miners could pick up their food with filthy hand, eat the middle and throw the rest away. It is said that if a pasty was thrown down a mine the pastry wouldn't break! I am from Wales too. Llanelli, dont tell Penny though, our 2 towns have a long history of rivalry! We are known as Turks, I cant remember why now, something to do with a strike and a boat?

I was from England (born in Essex in fact). Moved to Australia when I was 26, then France 11 years ago, but i've been living in New Jersey for 6 years.

All those years living in countries with universal healthcare, and now I'm in a country where healthcare costs a fortune, I get problems lol Couldn't make it up.
