Anyone Out There Using Your Own Recorded Sounds for Masking?

Hi, I'm searching for a way to record my shower (the best sound for me), or my wind chimes, or my waterfall to use as a tinnitus masking sound. I guess it could be a couple-minute loop or a whole hour or more.

A smartphone app, MP3 file played on a player sounds feasible now that I'm writing this.

Are you using your own sounds?

I'm not using any sounds because no sound will mask my T, so I've given up on masking, but back in the days when I was trying to, I'd find so many sounds online for free (some of which are recorded with professional equipment) that it felt a bit silly for me to try to record my own sounds.

I made my own audio files, but not from recording showers and not for purposes of masking. But I think it could be a good goal. Do consider searching youtube for shower recordings, and there are many, and you may find one close enough to your own. For me, the Random Bell Melody, here at this site and youtube provided good therapy, but YMMV. The important thing, imo, is to engage yourself positively with hope following your instincts.

Thank you for your message. I did find a wonderful app called White Noise. It's EXACTLY what I was looking for.

HI @Mitchel

I don't know if you are aware that masking tinnitus can actually make it worse if one is not careful. If you are using white noise or any other type of sound to "completely mask" the tinnitus so that it can't be heard this is not a good idea. Although the term masking is still used today by some people that have tinnitus. Hearing Therapists and Audiologist consider the word out-dated. Sound enrichment is the word of preference that is now used. By setting the sound slightly below the tinnitus, it allows the brain to habituate to it over time. The brain cannot habituate to tinnitus unless it can hear it.

A person can use whatever sound source they find helpful, although it's best to avoid using music at night as this can draw the brain's attention. Please click on the links below which covers sound enrichment in more detail that you might find helpful.

All the best
Michael

Pretty much the same for me, Greg. I've never bothered masking and I sleep in silence (except that I don't obviously). For me, and I know we are all different, masking has always just been more noise on top of noise. A mental trick one can use is to imagine that their tinnitus is an external noise that is the masking.

I have dabbled with it, but it's never been beneficial to me.

Thanks GregCA, Mic Leigh and Ed209. Good advice. I'm just coming to terms with my tinnitus, trying to see what helps, and what might trigger bad days. Your help is much appreciated!

No, YouTube has lots of relaxing videos of rain sounds, ocean, forest etc. Not going to bother by recording my own

I am not using sounds to mask my T, but I sometimes keep tv or some other sound source at low volume so I concentrate on that instead of my T.
