Has Anyone Eloped?

My fiancée and I have just started planning our wedding and are both feeling fairy indifferent about the whole thing. Even a small low key wedding will cost us around 10k.

We would much rather spend that money on travel and elope somewhere on our holiday. Has anyone done something similar? How did your family and friends feel about it?
