Headphones That Cause Tinnitus

Hi everyone. Do you think certain headphones cause tinnitus? I got a pair of Sennheiser HD650 and these top of the line headphone seem to make my tinnitus scream sand this is at a low volume where I can just hear the audio.

Anyone find certain headphones worse than others?

Are you sure that it's not the mere fact that you are reducing the input artificially that causes your T to spike? It is known that T stands out more when you have less input into your auditory system. Headphones can behave like ear muffs when the audio volume is very low.

When I wear ear protection, every noise around me is muffled, which makes my T stand out much more. It's not louder of course, but it is more perceptible.

One way to find out is to just wear those headphones in disconnected state: don't plug them anywhere. Wear those and check if you feel the same way.

Since your tinnitus was caused by loud noise, I do not advise you use headphones of any type even at low volume. This includes, earbuds, headsets, sleephones. Please click on the link below and read my post.

What style are they?

I find the closed can headphones increase the perception of tinnitus. On ear headphones allow ambient noise in. These are the ones that I like to wear. You will find many different views on headphones on this site. Some people swear that they make tinnitus worse. In my case, they have helped me live a normal life (31 years old and 30 years with tinnitus), while being fully functional in my job.

Also, regardless of opinion, scientific research does not see link between headphone use at reasonable volume and tinnitus.

I have no wish to get into an argument with you but will just say this. Please do not fall into the trap of relying on scientific evidence and tinnitus. Most of it is nonsense. The people carrying out these studies no very little about tinnitus and most have never experienced it. If you want to learn more about tinnitus, then the best way is to seek help from those that are seasoned to it and people that have had it for many years.

Anyone that has "noise induced" tinnitus and uses headphones risks making their tinnitus worse even if the volume is kept low. If you want proof of this, just peruse the many posts in this forum from people that have "noise induced" tinnitus, returned to using headphones and their tinnitus increased and will not return to its previous level. People contact me all the time because of the misery they are in because of headphones making their tinnitus worse.

Just last week someone in this forum contacted me. For 6 years this person's tinnitus remained low. He decided to take a chance and returned to using headphones at low level. Within a few days the tinnitus has increased to almost unbearable levels and this person is in a lot of distress. Cannot return to work and feels like their world is going to end.

It is true some people with "noise induced" tinnitus use headphones without any problems. However, there is always a risk of the tinnitus becoming worse and if it does it is very likely that it will not reduce to its previous level.
People will tell you there is nothing wrong with using headphones at low level. However, if your tinnitus becomes worse because of using headphones, these people will not be able to help you. Just remember that.

PS: Every time the subject of headphone use and tinnitus comes up it often causes much debate. I just want to say that I have said my piece and will end it there.

Not only have I had tinnitus for over 30 years, but I am also a research scientist.

I'm not going to call you a "n00b" but you are kind of coming across that way....

lol...That is a good one and I guess I deserve that. However, since you have had several acoustic traumas, perhaps your 30 years experience isn't quite up to my 22 years.

I am living proof, I got tinnitus from using headphones at low volume, so don't believe scientific research and you your common sense.
