Hello from Northern California

Got t after girlfriend screamed very loudly, high pitched right next to my left ear. We were watching a zombie movie and she thought it would be cute to act like one of the screaming victims...my ear took the full scream for a couple of seconds then I felt tingling. Next day I noticed sensitivity to sounds, conversations. I have three kinds: 1) bacon frying, 2) crickets, 3) 9khz dental drill. #3 is the worst by far as it is almost entirely somatic tied to muscles of my left side face. Pressing hard on the muscle makes an excruciatingly loud squeal. In normal settings, when I talk or someone talks to me, those muscles vibrate or twitch slightly and resonate with a high frequency tone along with the source sound. Been to ent with no input except that maybe it will get better. Can't play guitar or listen to music anymore...starting to resent my girlfriend's recklessness.

 

You've got hyperacusis, which is increased sensitivity to sound. Try keppra, which may be a possible cure. Good luck and hopefully that helps.

Did your ENT mention a tapered course of Prednisone? It can reverse acoustic trauma, but only if taken within 2-4 weeks of incident. I wouldn't wait on this!

Also, inform your girlfriend, She's fired! What was she thinking?

Yes hyperacusis indeed I have it too..yes it's awful...it can go away..I also have several different tones.
