Cause of Tinnitus

It has been 16 months that I've been dealing with this. It's a constant shrieking or whistling noise. It's not as noticeable when I'm focusing on something, but it gets worse when I try to rest, relax, or sleep. I can't stay busy all the time, and it has taken a toll on my anxiety and insomnia.

I do have some hearing loss, so I'm willing to give hearing aids a try. I've also had issues with my neck and spine, and I wonder if that could be the cause. I'm planning to try decompression to see if it gives me some relief.

I'm 84 years young, and I'd like to be able to sit, read, relax, and enjoy life. If anyone has found relief from hearing aids or decompression, please let me know.

When my tinnitus first started, I couldn't sleep at night either. I began using masking nature sounds to help me fall asleep. There are now many free apps on the Google Play Store that can mask tinnitus. Try playing them through a Bluetooth speaker and see if that helps you sleep. Take care, and God bless.

I am a God-fearing person, and repeating Psalm 23 helps me cope, especially the verse: "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil… and surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life."

Keep hoping. God helps us survive and thrive through life's many challenges. I am also going to try the app on Google Play.

Blessings.

It's great that you have a spiritual connection to help anchor you, sir/ma'am. I hope it and some masking help you! Hearing aids may well be an option for you, especially if you have marked hearing loss, but I've never tried them myself.

A recent thread here suggests some people have found relief. Another ended with the user off to get hearing aids, and they never reported back; that may mean it worked for them. Here, a young woman reports great relief from her hearing aids. Of course, for every person reporting a positive, there will always be someone reporting that it did nothing, or even made it worse. Everyone's different and you'll never really know until you try.

Still, at 84, you almost certainly have some hearing loss already. I'm not going to urge you to try them - I'm not a doctor - but it's definitely worth consulting with an audiologist.

I hope you have many good days ahead of you!
