Here's my "for what it's worth" story. My tinnitus spiked in my right ear immediately after I had a tooth pulled. The tooth was the last molar on the bottom, right side. I've had tinnitus for more than 30 years in both ears. It's sort of always been there and something I just deal with. This was different. The ringing shot up like 100% or more in that ear. Speech heard in that ear only sounded like Charlie Brown's teacher, totally unrecognizable. I'm 64, male, overall pretty good health, pretty fit for my age, but recently a bit up in my weight.
Of course my first thought was the tooth extraction. I went to an ENT guy and he said "no", the tooth was just a coincidence. I didn't believe him. He tested my hearing and there was definite loss in that ear. He gave me a course of steroids to take and several other meds aimed my ears. Two weeks later, no improvement. Repeat visit, still no improvement but my blood pressure was up. My weight was also up close to 20 pounds over a couple years before.
The doctor gave me another BP med on top of the other two I had been taking for years. But, I also decided to lose some weight. My BP came down to a more normal range. I'm not sure how much the elevated blood pressure and weight gain had contributed to the tinnitus but good to deal with both of those things anyway.
Cutting this long story short a bit - since getting my tooth out, I had been taking ibuprofen and or paracetamol, sometimes 3-4 times a day. Sort of became a habit. I ran out of the NSAID's for a few days. I just forgot to buy more or didn't want to go out get them or whatever, I was out. With losing some weight and my BP more normal, I noticed my tinnitus had also improved a bit. Not much but a bit. I still did not make the NSAID connection so I got some more ibuprofen and started taking it again - my tinnitus spiked! Duh... I stopped the pills cold.
I've been off the NSAID's now for going on 3 months and there is still a slightly increased ringing in that right ear but I can make out speech again and it's not nearly so annoying. It was always a bit raspy in that ear but now it's back to maybe 90% of where it was before.
The lesson in this for me was that you have to look at everything you have going on with your body and don't think that just because you haven't changed something in your routine, that nothing has changed. Plus, once again I learned that medicines are only masks for symptoms. I don't miss the ibuprofen, a few more aches and pains but I have not had a headache at all since I stopped and that was one reason I took them.
I hope my little story helps someone take a closer look at what the cause of their situation may be. Good luck out there.
