      Hi folks,

I was on Citalopram for depression caused by my tinnitus and sinus problems. Sadly it makes my eyes to blurry, so I need a different one. Can anyone recommend one that has actually helped them?

      Thanks.

Talk with your doctor about Nortriptyline or Mertazepin or Amitryptaline along with talking therapy.
All the above help depression, anxiety and sleep.

None of the antidepressants I have tried helped me. The problem isn't "depression", it's the constant screaming in my head that's preventing me from getting any rest. Don't bank on any of this stuff working.

Try Inositol with Glycine and Niacine ... or try one of these three. Helped me a lot....discussed it with my GP and also said that these are products to lower anxiety and help with depression. You can buy it in a powder form and does cost almost anything. :popcorndrink:

So these things are no AD's.... just a powder form of pure inositol , glycine or niacine and take them with something to drink

Citalopram gave me high blood pressure and Mertazepin makes me so tired it turns me into a zombie.

I'm not a small chap either but I do seem to be sensitive to meds. Of course to be fair everybody may have different results so it's not one med suits all.

Best advice talk to your GP

      Good luck

You have to treat the cause. You cannot hope for less tinnitus before treating you sinus problems.

I would advise going to a psychiatrist, to determine the best A/D for you. Even then, it's impossible to know in advance what will or won't work for you.

I believe I've tried five or six anti-depressants over the years.

Amitripyline makes me very drowsy and actually made the depression worse at times - but it did get me some good rest. I take it maybe 2 to 3 times a year when I get desperate for sleep.

Wellbutrin made the tinnitus worse. Tried that one three different times to be sure.

      Mirtazapine aggravated the tinnitus.

I don't remember the others off the top of my head, but they either were innefective, or in one case produced major mood swings.

I gave up on anti-depressants after the last one that produced the mood swings. I see a therapist regularly which helps with support. Talk therapy works in my case.

My tinnitus & hyperacusis have been ongoing for twenty years and are now quite severe. It also involves ear pain at times. The only medications that have helped me are Alprazolam for the tinnitus and Hydrocodone for the ear pain. The Alprazolam takes the edge off things and in doing that it helps ease the depression. But that's just my particular experience. Others report Alprazolam aggravates their tinnitus. Everyone can have differing results.

One other thing that has helped is massage therapy. Not the brutal deep tissue kind, but a gentle whole body massage from head to toes. It's relaxing and a pleasant distraction that helps me get through difficult days when the ears are particullary bad and my depression is starting to get the best of me.

      Hope this helps.

@rainmaker I'm interested in knowing more about your "how I got tinnitus" story. I've never heard of such a thing (I'm a nurse so I'm surprised that I haven't).
